Dedicated OS or Virtual? - zenTHEgreat - 03-16-2017

Hey guys another question about OS.

So I've been using ubuntu for some time and I've dabbled with multiple linux platforms such as mint, gnome and kali. The thing is I only used this OS's virtually through vmware or virtualbox. I want to know if it's better to run just run a dedicated linux OS or just use windows 10 or 7 as the host and run linux virtually?
The reason I'm asking is because I typically stream and view media off windows and if I decide to fully switch over to linux I want to make sure I'll be able to do the same and still use all that linux has to offer.

You can also dualboot or even tripleboot your system with Linux. Than you'll have Windows AND Linux. Be carefull with partitioning and installing it though. You might have some difficulties with it.

So partitioning the harddrive would prolly make the OS run much more smoothly opposed to running it virtually?

I changed my windows computer to Linux system once but I couldn't browse some of partitions.

What hardware do you have? If you have way too much hardware, just run linux as a host and vmware windows with unity.. If you're running an entry level rig, dual boot

Running virtualized is perfectly fine, I do it all the time. I'm a gamer, so I need Windows, and I prefer not partitioning my drive out of fear of royally fucking everything up (again), and I like not having to reboot whenever I switch. In fact, if you want/need a bunch of Linux environments like I do often, virtualization is the right way to go.

If you do decide to dual-boot, and there's nothing wrong with that, you can actually convert the virtual disk images (.vdi files) that VirtualBox generates into raw images, then flash those to devices on disk, effectively turning a virtual environment into a physical one. I'll probably do a tutorial on this pretty soon, so keep a lookout for that.

Running a virtual instance shouldn't affect the guest OS's speed much, if at all. It might make the host a little slower because there's now two system's worth of processing power and memory being used, as well as all the r/w operations to the virtual disk.

Currently I use Mac book pro mid 2012 with an i7 16gb ram and a 500 gb ssd, I'm currently building a new rig for me personally and I plan to spend $1k on it and include the top i7, m.2 ssd, and decent graphics and etc, do you suggest I just run linux off that rig ???

On VB is well but While I used it like host, The wifi was too bad because my net was stopping between time to time but I didn't understand why.

Dual booting is your best option at this point, if you are serious about linux.
