Is this legal/illegal? - FreightTrain - 01-24-2017 Kind of a simple question, but I've did some research and haven't really found a definite answer, so maybe someone here can help. Can you host a leaked database on your own site? I'm referring to a public/semi-public database that has been passed around for a year+ Without giving out too much detail, you would essentially be able to search your username on my site and the result from the database would show. I know it's nothing new, but I have some ideas and this is just the basis of it. Anyways, can I legally do this? Host a once-private then leaked database on my own site for monetary purposes? The results I was getting online only pointed towards if I was the one who hacked and released the database it would be illegal, but I don't have those skills (yet) . I'd rather not spend my time creating something if it were to just get taken down soon after it was up. Any help on this is welcome.
RE: Is this legal/illegal? - pvnk - 01-24-2017 Not legal, but no one would really care. RE: Is this legal/illegal? - Aeolian - 01-24-2017 The equivalent of stealing a candy bar? Kidding, this is illegal. RE: Is this legal/illegal? - Elf - 01-24-2017 But isn't that just like https://haveibeenpwned.com RE: Is this legal/illegal? - zenith - 01-24-2017 No matter how public the database is. It's still private information from the site. It's like if you wanna send a girls nudes to someone. No matter how many people have seen it. It's still the girls naked body. Yes it's illegal. But I'm sure hosts that you pay for won't give a shit. If you are using a free host, then your site will be taken down before you can say "lolichan" RE: Is this legal/illegal? - Pikami - 01-24-2017 In some countries it is not a crime because it's public domain data. Just know the laws in your country and area. Of course it’s unlikely you’ll get in any trouble, but you never know. Be safe. It's the opposite of that. You saying that in regards to databases would make it legal to publicly post them. Because "since they are public, they can be featured by anybody." Not the case. RE: Is this legal/illegal? - Wolfsschanze - 01-24-2017 Yeah, it's illegal. Unlikely you'll get in trouble though.
