Do you approve? - Jiggly - 05-28-2016 It has been in the news today that Obama visited Hiroshima. He is the first serving US President to have visited the site but it was reported that he did not apologise for the bombing. Interestingly, this links to the release of this article: A poll about what Americans think about the bombings What's your view? RE: Do you approve? - Oni - 05-28-2016 He didn't apologize, but I remember him saying that we should aim to avoid similar tragedies in the future. He seemed fairly sympathetic. He seemed fairly sympathetic. Yes, apparently he wants to move nations away from nuclear war. RE: Do you approve? - mothered - 05-28-2016 In my views, I believe he should've apologized for the Innocent lives that were lost, and the long-term ramifications of those affected by the radiation of the bombing. Military combat against armed forces Is one thing. Killing Innocent civilians Is simply not on. Obama (as much as I dislike him) isn't responsible for Truman's decision. War is war, there's no moral way to victory. Yes I know, and I definitely agree In terms of the "decision". He Is though, responsible as "the" representative of the United States, and that role Involves speaking for the country's Involvement as a whole- past and present. On these grounds, that's what my previous post Is based on. I see your point and you are correct with the decision side of It. It's Obama's position as the president of the United States and the responsibility that comes with It, In speaking for the entire nation pertaining to past and present events. RE: Do you approve? - insidious - 05-28-2016 Though the nuclear bombs probably saved many military deaths b/c the U.S and Russia didn't have to invade Japan over land + air, the innocent who died are inexcusable. Makes me wonder why he didn't apologize for that. I thought the US was a bit better than Russia when it came to apologizing for stuff like this RE: Do you approve? - Jiggly - 05-28-2016 I am curious about the thinking behind not apologising. He ended up hugging one of the survivors... RE: Do you approve? - Kaneki Ken - 05-28-2016 Obama had no reason to apologize and the United States also had no reason to apologize, we did what we had to do. And if you look at what that nuclear explosion did to Japan, well it made them stronger and it made them who they are today. They don't go out and start stupid wars because of fear of something like what happened will happen again. They know better than to start a war. Japan has always been isolated from the rest of the world. But after the bombing, they isolated themselves even more from world politics and foreign affairs, I think that's what makes Japan so great. So I approve of the bombing, unfortunately. RE: Do you approve? - Satan - 05-28-2016 Even in the demographics, it shows that the majority that disapprove of its use were those who weren't alive during that point in time. Japan would not stop. Even their soldiers were killing themselves to avoid capture, and the US had thought long and hard over the use of these weapons, what situations they would be appropriate for, etc. The purpose of the bombs was to stop the war with Japan as quickly as possible. It was horrible, but worked. |
