How to make a USB Bootable OS in windows - Captin_Lulzboat - 09-11-2015 Here is a simple way to download Linux OS and place them on a USB to use for a boot-able OS rather than a dual boot or a VM. I personally like this over any other option because you get to use all your computers resources on this OS instead of sharing them and making it slower. Things you need I suggest a USB stick with at least 16gigs or more. You may not need that big but I always buy them in 32 or bigger since there cheap anyway. Windows PC You are going to need to download a program to flash the OS on the USB. There are plenty of free ones out there that work. The one I am going to share also comes pre loaded with a few Linux Distros for someone who wants to try them all. First thing you will need to do is download Universal USB Installer made by Pendrivelinux. Virus Scan Download Link Once you have that downloaded and installed we can begin. Once you open the program you will notcie you can select a Linux Distro in the first drop down. ![]() (I personally would use linux mint. Very light weight and easy to use) It will need to download the OS you choose so that could take a while. You could also download the iso seperatly instead of using the one shown in the app Just go to linuxmint.com and download the most recent iso file and save it to your desktop. Once its all downloaded and ready to go, click browse and choose the ISO and then select the USB drive. ![]() After you click create the process will start burning it to the USB. If you ever want to try a new OS just repeat the steps. You can also do this right over an existing USB it does not have to be a new one. I have been using the same USB for the past 2 years. Now to use this all you need to do is pwoer down your PC, while its booting up enter the bios menu and change the boot order to boot the USB drive first. once you save that power it off again, insert the usb and then power it on. It should load directly into the OS you place on the USB. if not verify the ISO file is correct and downloaded fully. Enjoy!
