Ubuntu on Windows - insidious - 03-31-2016 http://blog.dustinkirkland.com/2016/03/ubuntu-on-windows.html?m=1 found this on HackerNews today Not even microsoft can escape the spell of linux. This makes me very happy. No more will I have to struggle with Git Bash, Cygwin, and other shit that bloats up my windows system even more than it should be just so I can emulate what already should be implemented. Very excited for this update. Anyone else? RE: Ubuntu on Windows - mothered - 03-31-2016 I'm a heavy user of the Windows platform, and only use Linux from time to time. I must say, I like the Idea of having the best of both worlds on a single platform. Whether It will extend Ubuntu to It's full potential, Is a different story. Perhaps some Linux members can shed light on this. RE: Ubuntu on Windows - sleaze - 03-31-2016 saw this on slashdot earlier, can't wait to see the actual results. RE: Ubuntu on Windows - m0dem - 03-31-2016 Quote:A team of sharp developers at Microsoft has been hard at work adapting some Microsoft research technology to basically perform real time translation of Linux syscalls into Windows OS syscalls. Linux geeks can think of it sort of the inverse of "wine" -- Ubuntu binaries running natively in Windows. Microsoft calls it their "Windows Subsystem for Linux". (No, it's not open source at this time.) This is odd. Why would Microsoft want to integrate Linux into Windows? Oh well, I'm not complaining... RE: Ubuntu on Windows - Skullmeat - 03-31-2016 I heard something about them bringing MySQL to Linux. That might have something to do with it. Either way, very cool. Not sure if it is Ubuntu to it's absolute fullest potential, but as long as a linux user is proficient with the linux command line it should offer most of what linux offers. Quote:And most of the tens of thousands binary packages available in the Ubuntu archives! The article compares it to Wine as the closest to what Microsoft is doing, so i'm sure not all the packages will be absolutely compatible, just like with Wine, and some packages will probably come with annoying glitches. It's a great start though, and I hope microsoft will improve upon it according to user feedback (which they are already doing, since it's available to "Windows Insiders"). It's basically as close as they can get to a Linux enviroment without doing a total do-over and replacing whatever Microsoft uses with the Linux kernel. It's also a great move on Windows part for developers I think, since many of them curse the name of Windows for development, and this might bring some of them back. I think it may because Windows is currently one of the choices developers stay away from, often choosing Mac OSX and Linux instead. On the other hand, they may be trying to break into the open-source side of things. I'm by no means a linux/OS expert, though. Those are just my thoughts/opinions from some experiences as someone who uses Linux as their daily-driver RE: Ubuntu on Windows - m0dem - 03-31-2016 (03-31-2016, 07:52 PM)insidious15 Wrote: I'm not totally sure. RE: Ubuntu on Windows - D3faultCell - 03-31-2016 Well, this is very interesting I can't wait to see how they implement it. RE: Ubuntu on Windows - NoNs - 04-01-2016 i don't know what they mean to merge windows and linux together, but i hope it's will work, i don't care about linux much but i used it because i work with server all the time, it's really easy to work with "bash" :3 wait for its RE: Ubuntu on Windows - BiscuitEdi - 04-01-2016 This is way better than running third party programs. |
