I can't see how a wheel supported with spokes, can cause that amount of damage to that part of the car (bumper bar) that's designed to resist front-end collisions. Very funny though. It's the "wheel" of the bike that's In question, and not a more solid part such as the frame/body. The wheel Is supported by flimsy spokes that I can easily bend by hand. Now If I were riding my bike at full speed (which would've been the case to cause that amount of damage to the vehicle) and ran Into a plastic 240 litre trash can (similar to those left In the front of one's house for collection each week), I'd say my bike's wheel would be significantly damaged, so too the rider being myself. I'm not saying the damage to the car Is not possible, It's just a little hard to believe the extent of the damage, and that It was caused by the "wheel" of the bike. Anyway, the moral of this thread Is the jovial side of It. And It's certainly funny. Given a 1000kg car, that means a 8000N force can crush the bumper up to 10mm. If we assume that the crush-resistance of a bumper is linear, which it probably isn't, that means 800N would be needed for 1mm of compression, making a to-spec bumper nearly half as strong as a bike wheel. |
