The best member to comment on this would be @fire (now known as @Earth)

He's very well Informed and equipped with many knives of different nature.

I used to carry a 10 inch fixed-blade "tactical" knife when I lived/worked on a Native Reserve for defence. It mysteriously disappeared after I moved away. Never ended up replacing it. Don't have a picture of it, and i can't recall what brand/model it was any more.

Nowadays I carry a Buck 112 for utility, and defence I suppose if necessary. Have had it for about 5 years now. Got it after the Buck 110 I got as a child went missing.

Now that I think about it... a lot of my knives eventually go missing... lol

Well being a prepper I always have gear with me or near me especially in my vehicles. But as for EDC I am not into folders I prefer fixed blades.

My current EDC as well as one of my main knives is my KaBar Becker BK16.

Good thing fixed blades are legal to carry here.

EDIT: 666 Posts, that can't be good.

I definitely prefer fixed blades. For my job I can't currently carry a fixed yet. I have been thinking about getting a Ka Bar. How is your BK16 treating you?

The KaBar is excellent it feels great in the hand, the heat treat was done right, it holds an edge.

Just expect to strip the coating off and get a custom sheath made for it eventually the factory sheath is not the best.

I stripped the coating off of mine and put a mustard patina on it and then did a boiled vinegar patina over that.

The BK16 is considered a higher end knife like the ESEE and RAT's costing about $80 total on Amazon.

KaBar uses 1095 CroVan which is similar to regular 1095 just stronger, slightly more rust resistant but it is still high carbon, and it holds the edge longer.

The knife was designed by Ethan Becker which is one of the best out there, he designs his knives right.

I'm not educated on this fancy knife, but can ensure you my 10 dollar gas station knife can cut and stab any one stupid enough to walk up on me just fine. Nothing fancy, just a fold up but hell 4" of blade pretty much any where is more than enough to do the job.

I carry a Victorinox Tinker EDC (except when I can't find it like right now lol. Probably in my other jacket.) I use this for utility.

I don't carry a knife for self defense, that's what my pistol is for.

EDC folders don't need to be fancy, cheap $10 knives will do just fine for cutting boxes, wire, just every day things. However don't let your life depend on it.

Nobody in the right mind would try to put a folder through the abuse of which a full-tang knife like my KaBar can handle and those folders couldn't handle it either unless you go for higher end benchmades, cold steels, etc which still are not designed for it.

RE: EDC Knives? - The Real Slim Shady - 11-17-2015

Indeed, if it has a crap locking mechanism (or none at all) you're just as likely to severe your fingers to some degree. I don't think i'd trust a 10$ knife for anything more than opening boxtops, or maybe cutting an apple into pieces or something lol.
