Thoughts about the killer USB-drive - Bish0pQ - 10-22-2015

So apperently someone has created an USB drive which litterly fries your system. Pretty terrifying, although it's not all software but it is more hardware based.

What are your thought about this?

A lot of the comments are pointing out how fake it is....I also think it is fake because of science.

It could be fake very true, that it sets on fire is a bit exaggerated I guess, but I do think it might be possible to overload the motherboard with an extreme high-low voltage and that is what it does (according to the websites).

You should consider the source. It says "We Are Anonymous" at the top of the page. Surely you don't trust it? Tongue

Spoiler:
Seriously...

I don't see why that matters, it is posted on a lot of other news sites as well. Most news doesn't get posted on regular news sites.

Thanks for the feedback.

KillerUSB is popular as fuck, it's not just posted on the "anonymous" website, gay shit, whatever.
But the thing is that I don't believe it works, yes it might fuck things up, but they never showed any proof that anything is burned or crashed or anything, just a laptop that stopped turning on which can be caused my multiple reasons, lets not forget that today's laptops aren't as fucked as they say they are, there's a lot of shit that protects your computer from these kind of attacks, anyone who knows a bit about electricity in general would know that there's "no way" this kind of attacks can actually do what they said it would.

Good point. It is true that there is only 1 video about it so it's doubtful for sure.

I don't see how. Usb drive can generate enough electricity to fry the components. Sure it could break the usb port but most modern laptops have safety features in place to stop such a high voltage passing through the usb ports. I call bullshit.

Exactly this, unless the USB was externally powered then it would struggle to generate the power...

For arguments sake lets say we remove the usb safety feature and it can pass power through the entire system.

The best bet would be maybe an external hard drive that required two USB's plugged in, that way you could at least create a circuit and generate more heat / power rather than just deliver a payload, you could also install small batteries.

But then things would get expensive sooo.

Capacitors, bro.

Surge protection can only protect up to so much, and a boat load of capacitors unloading could easily bridge this.
