First recorded attempt of a smuggling plot using drones - Inori - 08-31-2015

Two men in Maryland allegedly tried to smuggle; porn, drugs and a hand gun into the western Maryland state prison. However, officials were able to intercept the two men before their plot was able to take off.

The duo were found last Saturday (08/22/15) on a side road that runs alongside the Western Correctional Institution in Cumberland. Officials found an unmanned remote controlled aircraft within the pair’s car, announcing that the aircraft was a drone.

Although, other forms of evidence concealed in the car suggests that their drone was not just for entertainment.

Also found in the vehicle was many packets of K2 (a form of marijuana), tobacco, suboxone, DVDs containing pornographic content and a hand gun. A tweet from the state agency shows the contents found in the car:

State officials later announced that it is thought that the pair in the car were planning to fly the drone onto the western Correctional Institution grounds for inmates to collect.

“This is the first case in Maryland where a drone is suspected in a contraband delivery plot,” said the state Public Safety and Correctional Services Secretary, Stephen Moyer.

Corrections spokesman, Mark Vernarelli later told CNN that they are now in the phase of trying to find out who the pair have connections to within the prison, if any.

The owner of the vehicle was already under surveillance from the state for quite some time – police knew he had a bad history.

The findings in the vehicle led to the arrest of both men. One man was held behind a $250,000 bail, the other was held without bail.

This is the first recorded case of someone trying to fly a drone into a prison in Maryland, but not in the US.

For instance, last month a drone was able to drop 144.5 grams of tobacco, 65.4 grams of marijuana and 6.6 grams of heroin straight into the courtyard of the Mansfield Correctional Institution in Ohio. Leading to a massive fight between many inmates as well as around 70 bystanders. Guards didn’t even know that the contraband was dropped until they were able to make their way though the prisoners.

It wasn’t till later that day when they discovered via CCTV that is was actually a drone that flew over and dropped the package.

Ohio authorities later stated that they would be on the lookout for things like this happening again in the future, training guards to know what to look for.

“It’s something we’re certainly aware of,” said Ohio state corrections spokeswoman JoEllen Smith. “We’re taking a broad approach to increasing staff awareness and detection.”

Going back to the original case; Many people do not believe that the two in the car were actually going to fly the drone over into the prison as the contents that officers discovered seems simply to much to be carried via drone. Looking again to last months drop, it seems very plausible for some drones to carry large amounts of items.

What will be the consequences if drones continue to fly over prison walls? Higher walls? EMPs? Domes over the courtyards? It is all very possible.
