Knife Sharpeners - Earth - 05-10-2015
If you are looking for some nice knife sharpeners you can choose from the list below. These sharpeners may not be suitable for all knives.
Work Sharp Guided Field Sharpener
This is a dummy proof sharpener that I find works fine up until you start passing 5" on blade size, it uses diamond plates, leather strop, built in ceramic rods and guides you, and if used correctly it will give a shaving sharp blade.
Recurve Knifes
Recurve knifes are not my cup of tea but using a diamond rod such as the EZE Lap will help maintain the edge, use a strop to get it back to razor sharpness. Also the Work sharp Knife & Tool sharpener will get the job done.
Lansky Diamond Deluxe Sharpening System
This is a good sharpening system and will work on all straight edge knives to probably about 5.5" comfortably. It is a more professional style and will take longer to sharpen a knife with but in the end you will have a very sharp knife. Just choose the correct angle and do back and forth strokes equally across the blade. Use water and not the included oil.
Work Sharp Knife & Tool Sharpener
This is an electric sharpener which sharpens all kinds of knives small to big, recurve, straight with just a couple of swipes and always provides a razor sharp edge. For $60 you can't go wrong.
Lansky Dual Grit Puck
This is a great sharpening puck for working on your axe or hatchet blades, it does the job and gets it back to a working edge.
Smith's TRI-6 Arkansas
This is another great sharpening system which will work with straight edged knives, it does the job but I prefer diamond sharpeners.
Smith's 8-Inch Diamond Tri-Hone
This is what I believe to be one of the best, it can be used with straight edged knives but is on the pricey side of about $80.
Leather Strops
Leather strops are used to take micro burrs off and polish the edge really any real leather will do the job but veg tan is what I like. You can choose to use a stropping compound but it is not necessary.

I've got a Norton IM200 tri-stone and a bench stone from DMT; and they're working like a charm ^^ I've never tried a Smith's one, but I hear they're neat. Any opinions?

I never heard of Norton, but I know the DMT Diafolds are good so I would assume there bench stones would be good.
The Smith's does a good job but it all depends on how good you are at keeping the angle right while making the passes.
The Norton does look very well made so if it does the job I would continue using it, the only concern I would have is I only see it shows 320 grit to be the finest?, I would like to see a minimum of at least 900 grit.
What do you use your knives for? out doors, working, hobby, collecting, etc?

Yeah, that's one problem; but combined with a diamond sharpener or something finer it works delightful
I hike whenever I get the time, and make some extra money by going with hiker groups as a field medical. So basically quite rough outdoors work ^^ What about you? Any outdoors work?

I do bushcraft but right now I am stuck indoors because I gashed my toe open and its infected and sore to walk on I was working when it happened and wanted to keep working but everyone insisted I get it dealt with because of the way it was bleeding.
And you study medical then or just know it?, how did you get into medical stuff?

Well, I started out taking a few first response courses, and when it was time for Uni, the choice was simple ^^

Nope no need for a Doctor, just had to dig into my first aid kit which I was not happy about because that was for my prepping so now I got to re-stock with more.
I poured peroxide on it multiple times, threw antibiotic ointment on it, used non-stick gauze and tightly taped it up. It still was slightly bleeding the next day, I re-did the gauze and antibiotic ointment left it on for another day then after that I been letting it air out. Now I just put a sock on over it with no bandage.
Earlier today I removed excess/buldged up skin then slid my sock back on.
I think I am prepared medically other then when it comes to broken bones, venomous snake bites, and arterial bleeding. So if it came down to lets say someones leg or arm being cut bad and it was arterial bleeding in a long term survival situation the only option I could think of is to take my machete and amputate and cauterize the wound. As for breaks I guess just try to find out which way the break occurred and try to break it back into place.
Venomous snake bite I guess the only option is to wait for death.

If the bleeding is that bad, don't forget about the option of a tourniquet. Better option than bleeding out

Well if the world went to shit and there is no hospitals or medical help around then the choices are slim.

That's pretty much what I'd do as well; though try breaking it back with caution not to cause any more damage ^^
Depressive, but almost true. You could carry some sort of snake bite serum, and make sure to tourniquet the bitten extremity ^^
