What is a "role"?

Simply put, a role is a specific job that benefits a team composition in some way. There are many roles and some of them are almost mandatory for a successful team, while others are optional depending on how your team likes to play.

Think of your team composition like a cake; there's frosting and toppings and layers of dough and a plate. That's a good cake. If you had a team of all frosting the cake would just be a horrible messy pile on your table. Try to keep thinking about this while the guide progresses.

There are many different roles on the team and they all need to do different things in order to accomplish the same task. Each role has it's own characteristics that make it what it is. For example one of the most important roles on any team is the Tank. The Tank characteristically has Magic Resist, Armour and Health so that it can take lots of hits from opponents. This benefits the team by taking the damage off of other champions with way less HP and Armour and all that.

Different types of roles

Tank: The tank has high health, high armour and high magic resistance which allows it to take attacks from multiple opponents, keeping the pressure off more vulnerable teammates. The tank has to initiate fights in order for the teammates to run in and deal damage without getting focused down quickly. The tanks skillset consists of defensive buffs, stuns and other CC, shields and more.

Good Examples: Shen, Taric, Cho'Gath, Galio

Carry: Carries can be either AD or AP, or ranged or melee. They are usually very squishy and can get completely ROFLstomped early game. They need to be "carried" through the early game stages by teammates. Late game they're still squishy, but with a good farm and some kills they have the highest consistent damage output on the team. They "carry" the team to a victory. To counter early game vulnerability, they are put in the duo lane along with a tank or support champion to keep them alive (the duo lane almost always being Bottom Lane).

Good Examples: (ranged) Miss Fortune, Caitlyn, Vayne, (melee) Master Yi, Gangplank, Talon

DPS: When the team has all of the important roles covered, a DPS champion is always a good choice if your team needs more kick. A DPS champion is commonly synonymous with a DPS Soak, otherwise referred to as an Offtank. These champions like tanks can take damage without dying quickly, but still have the ability to dish out some pain through a mostly offensive skill kit and damage items.

Good Examples: Xin Zhao, Sion, Udyr

Support: Here's another pretty important role. The support can't really take any hits and it certainly can't do much damage, but the support role carries it's weight by assisting it's team with CC, counter CC, buffs, heals, debuffs, map vision and so much more. Early game they normally stick with the carry to let him or her farm safely.

Good Examples: Sona, Soraka, Janna, Galio

Jungler: A unique and certainly important role, more commonly seen in the higher level ranked play and less so pre-level 30. The jungler does a variety of things to aid the team. Firstly and most importantly he or she has NO lane, which gives another member of the team a solo lane allowing them to get more gold and XP to level up more quickly. The jungler clears the jungle to get gold and XP, killing creep camps and important buffs. The jungler also has to perform 'ganks' for the team, jumping out of the jungle to help a teammate kill an enemy in their lane before returning to kill more creeps. A jungler needs sustain, meaning health regen and high armour, in order to clear the jungle quickly without dying. The jungle also co ordinates the killing of Dragon (usually with bottom lane) and even Baron later on in the game.

Good Examples:Skarner, Udyr, Lee Sin

Burst: This is most commonly an AP champion, known as a caster. They do not have consistent damage output but they can instead employ their cooldowns to dish out some S-E-R-I-O-U-S damage during teamfights or 1v1, known as nuking. AD champions can also potentially be burst if they have skills which give them short but powerful buffs in order to obliterate an opponent before it can fight back. Bursts are usually squishy.

Good Examples: Veigar, LeBlanc, Kassadin

Successfu team composition

Like I said before, no matter what kind of cake we're baking we don't want it to be a homogeneous pile of goo. Your team needs at least one carry. No buts. Your team needs at least 2 ranged champions, and at least 2 melee champions. Your team needs one caster, preferably in mid lane. Your team needs a support or a tank, preferably in bottom lane. Your team needs a solotop (could be an offtank or another caster). Your team needs a jungler (unless you aren't playing ranked). Do this, and I promise at least a 300% better score than a team with 5 carries.

I have compiled a checklist for you to follow when compiling a team:

Do we have a carry?
Do we have a caster?
Do we have a jungler?
Do we have a tank/support?
Do we have two ranged champions?
Do we have two melee champions?
Do we have 4 or more CC's (stun, snare, slow, knock up...)?
Do we have variety (AoE's, 1v1 duelists, bursts)?
Will we get destroyed early game (soraka, vayne, kassadin, veigar, leblanc)?

Situations and counters

The "Situation" of a game is basically the overall meta of the game you're in. If the enemy team is really building that armour and HP then you'll need to counter it by building armour penetration or by using items like Madred's Bloodrazor. The biggest mistake beginning players hoping to become intermediate players make is building the same way every game. Your build needs to be flexible and adaptive to work well in any situation, and that means buying the right items for the situation.

How do I "Counter"?

Well first you need to identify your main issue. For example, bottom lane fed this Master Yi really hard and now he's slicing the rest of the team into ribbons. Your main issue is Yi's Attack Speed (usually). There are many items that can counter AD and AS, which we will get into later. You're also going to have to revise your playstyle to counter the situation. Master Yi makes an excellent duelist, or 1v1 fighter. To counter this your team is going to have to stick together and not solo.

Prioritization

It's a big word, but use it religiously. Prioritization or "focusing" is the act of targeting certain champions in order to shut them down, or because they are the biggest threat. Let's use our Master Yi example, hmm? He's outputting enough damage to kill the whole team 1v1. When it comes to a teamfight, he needs to be prioritized (focused) by your whole team so that he dies first. This takes him out of the battle, taking damage off the team, and it also prevents him from getting more gold and further increasing his power. Prioritization is the third and final major method of countering.

Even when no one on the enemy team is particularly fed, prioritization is still a game-stakingly important tactic. Tanks, for example, do very little damage and are very hard to kill. Save them for last. The carry and the caster, however, are doing buckets of damage and can be killed very quickly, so they should be targeted first. This strategy is key. Also think about countering the counter. They're going to be prioritizing your casters and carries as well, right? So instead of letting them initiate and charge into battle, let the tanks soak up the enemies aggro first before moving in for some kills.

Items

Countering is all about the items, and thankfully there are a TON of items that can counter almost any situation.

Attack Damage/Speed cutting up your tank? Your tank needs more Armour. Warmog's is usually a good choice. Thornmail is also a very useful item which not only gives armour, but it also has a unique passive that returns the enemies AD into bonus Magic Damage. Sweet.

Caster two-shotting your team? Magic Resistance is what you need. Go for a Spirit Visage if you really think you need it, although most long-cooldown burst skills only require a Banshee's Veil, which gives you a spell shield that completely blocks an incoming skill.

Too much health for your team to deal with? Cut them down to size with a Madreds Bloodrazor. This beauty is expensive and only an AD carry/dps should get it, but the stats are huge plus the excellent passive allows you to deal bonus magic damage equal to 4% of the enemies max HP. Recommended highly for Teemos.

Enemies running around the Rift at Godly Speeds™ ? Throw a Slow at them to catch up. AD carry/dps and junglers can pick up Red Buff for some temporary slowing action, while certain champions including tanks might have a CC skill that applies a stun or a slow, such as Karthus' Wall of Pain. Items like Trinity Force and Frozen Mallet also give slows.

Full build completed but still getting smacked? Grab an Elixir of Fortitude for some AD and HP. Other Elixirs, like the Elixir of Brilliance, grant other things like Ability Power and CDR.
