Self Driving Cars??? - Jester - 04-29-2014 Anyone else hear about this?? Aparently google has been testing for years on freeways and is now moving into city driving styles rather than just straight lines etc So what do you guys think? Self driving cars yey or nay?? And whats your thoughts on it? RE: Self Driving Cars??? - Spirit - 04-29-2014 I heard about this the other day. I really don't think that having a self-driving car would be a good idea... I mean... What if you were about to get into a car accident and you didn't have time to take control over the thing and use the brakes so you just die? Though, I'm almost positive that they have probably setup a system to prevent these types of situations. All in all, I say nay. RE: Self Driving Cars??? - Nailo - 04-29-2014 Idk mate sounds cool? but again people need to have in mind that since its man-built its not a perfect system thus it will not completely eliminated driving accidents but merely reduced them a bit(hopefully), but then again iam not a car-guy but a merely bicycle lover, pun intended. Good concept but not fully thought through. Emergancy over ride would solve the braking issue maybe but it would need to very fast due to human reaction time. However I think the real problem is rival companies doing the same thing. Their systems would obv be different meaning more accidents etc. RE: Self Driving Cars??? - chmod - 04-29-2014 If this where to ever get past the experimental stage there would undoubtedly be a standard to which all cars are made so that they can communicate with each other. I remember reading about this a couple of years ago and iirc they use a combination of sonar magnets camera's and gps so they can effectively "see" what's around them and make decisions from there. As with all technology there's always a chance things could go wrong, but there will most likely be multiple failsafe mechanisms in place. RE: Self Driving Cars??? - Yung Lean - 04-30-2014 I just can't image that. Then there will be Self Drifting ?

Right now self-driving cars(only legal in a few states: Nevada, California, and Flordia iirc) need to have a human driver (as all related laws presume a human operator) who is aware at the wheel. It self-drives but the human needs to be able to step in and take control. It is interesting to note that the Google Self-driving cars have only been known to have been involved in two accidents. The last being in 2011 and the car was being driven manually at the time. The first being an unknown time before that when one of their cars was rear-ended at a stop-light. Neither was the fault of the self-driving car but the human operators. According to Google's Blog in 2012 the cars had already managed over 300,000 miles of actual road driving without an accident caused by the computer. I imagine this has increased significantly in the last couple years. http://googleblog.blogspot.hu/2012/08/the-self-driving-car-logs-more-miles-on.html Quote:If this where to ever get past the experimental stage there would undoubtedly be a standard to which all cars are made so that they can communicate with each other. Google Car-2-Car Communication Consortium (C2C-CC) and V2X(Vehicle to X) protocol for some specific information about vehicular networks. According to a press-release in February by the US National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHSTA) they are moving forward to try and make a standard fort eh technology. http://www.nhtsa.gov/About+NHTSA/Press+Releases/2014/USDOT+to+Move+Forward+with+Vehicle-to-Vehicle+Communication+Technology+for+Light+Vehicles also check out http://www.safercar.gov/v2v This type of communication is in the works with most of the major players in the auto-industry on-board and the government also. --------- Overall I'd say that we are well on the way to self-driving vehicles and I imagine early on it will be necessary for people to be in-control. Once more trust is gained of the system which would likely take 10-20years(pure guess work) it might become okay in certain areas for there not to be a human in control(say on freeways) before eventually having human control non-mandatory. In my opinion it will undoubtedly be coming and I look forward to it. Yeah I also look forward to it but I would imagine there being some resistance from cab drivers as I imagine it would negatively effect their work. But that leads on to another awesome idea, automated cabs, just jump in program where you need to go insert money and sit back. It would most likely be a lot less expensive due to not having to pay a human driver a wage, just the fuel wear and tear and some profit for the owner (who would likely have several of these on the road. All in all this would be a great idea RE: Self Driving Cars??? - dropzon3 - 05-04-2014 Quote:But that leads on to another awesome idea, automated cabs, just jump in program where you need to go insert money and sit back Yea there have been rumors that Google is working on this actually, and rised being funded by advertisements. The rumors gained some traction recently due to Google's recently approved patent: US8630897 (B1) - Transportation-aware physical advertising conversions http://worldwide.espacenet.com/publicationDetails/biblio?CC=US&NR=8630897&KC=&FT=E&locale=en_EP Just rumors right now; personally I don't put much weight into them considering how slow-going the self-driving car in general has been. Yet it wouldn't surprise me to see Google try to roll something like this out. |
