Malware is possible on any operating system or device that can run code.

Linux is also a frequently targeted operating system as it runs the bulk of the internets servers.

Yes!! This version of Ubuntu is vulnerable. I'd say nothing is invulnerable these days but yeah!! Its far more safer than windows.:Laughing:

Ubuntu 12.04LTS is vulnerable to the recent heartbleed bug (The HeartBleed Bug)

This version also has almost 8 kernel vulnerabilities and this can be fixed by updating to system package linux-image-3.2.0-53 (3.2.0-53.81).

Some of the bugs are the following:

1.CVE 2013-1059
Its a Null pointer flaw in the Linux kernel's Ceph client.
A remote attacker could exploit this flaw to cause a DOS attack
(system crash).

2.CVE 2013-1060
Its a flaw in the Linux Kernel's perf tool that
allows for privilege escalation. A local user could exploit this flaw to run commands as root when using the perf tool.

3.CVE 2013-1064
Its an information leak in the Linux kernel's cdrom
driver
. A local user can exploit this leak to obtain sensitive information from kernel memory if the CD-ROM drive is malfunctioning.

4.CVE 2013-2232
It poses a threat when ipv6 socket is used to connect to ipv4 destination. An unprivileged local user could exploit this flaw to cause a DOS attack KaBOOOM!!

...and other 4 vulnerabilities with a comparatively low risk.

A fact you just said. :Thumbs-Up: A device that can run code is vulnerable to some code.

And how many of these are detected by antiviruses or have malware written to take advantage of them?

What relevance does any of what you posted have to do with needing an antivirus? All of those vulnerabilities can be fixed by upgrading or modifying your distribution. no antivirus needed.

Oh really!! I see he was talking about antivirus for Ubuntu 12.04lts. and I went on giving lecture on vulnerabilities. :epic: :Gasp:
Lol. I agree. I need a sleep i guess. And yes, Linux doesn't protect you from bugs in JS and browsers. I know you will not need any AV in Ubuntu but still you can be sure about your wine programs with an AV, and i guess ubuntu can act as a carrier to spread viruses on usb drives that can hurt your windows system if you use it frequently in windows computer too . Correct me if I'm wrong.

So If I wubi installed my ubuntu, there is a very high chance of a windows virus intefering with my ubuntu part?

Unlikely that it'll do any damage unless it was designed specifically to get at linux through windows, which is also quite unlikely.

RE: VIRUS in Ubuntu linux - erpicci - 05-15-2014

Going back to the original question, one more point for having an antivirus for GNU/Linux is that a lot of servers (mail server, file storage...) run this OS, and antivirus software enhance security.

For instance, anyone may send to a Windows user an infected file (trought a GNU/Linux SMTP sever). If the server has an antivirus, the malevolous mail won't even reach the Windows user.

RE: VIRUS in Ubuntu linux - letitshutdown - 05-22-2014

most linux server, that aren't upgraded or patched are d most vulnerable, while installing AV might seems to help but it isn't in most cases, AV written for linux are to clear off the mind freak bug of thinking that a virus might exist on our linux box.

RE: VIRUS in Ubuntu linux - BORW3 - 05-22-2014

Just found out that there are currently only 57 viruses in ubuntu and linux
