Keep steganography upon ppload? - Aut•ono•mous - 11-05-2013

Hey guys! So I'm teaching my girlfriend how to embed & extract messagees into image files, just thought it'd be neat, but I wonder ..is there any possible way to keep embedded data in an image file when its uploaded to sites such as Facebook? I'm using Steghide for Ubunto 13.04 if this helps answer the question.

There is an old method of hiding rar files as jpeg's in which you can hide text files and such(where you compress the data you want to hide into a rar archive and then use he terminal to copy that and the image to a single file with a jpg extension), but not sure if this would work with Facebook though or if it's even what your looking for

Thank you for your reply! I already know how to do that, I never really ask my questions very clearly, lol.

Basically, if I were to add a txt file to a jpg & then upload it to someones wall via Facebook, could they right click & save as.. & then extract the txt file, or would uploading it remove the embedded file?

I'm not sure if there's any image hosting sites out there that wouldn't affect the embeded file but it'd be awesome if there were some way.

It looks like Facebook copies the image rather than uploading it as a direct file for download.

I see, to be perfectly honest I'm not sure (not a facebook user). The best option would be to just try it and see what happens some photo sharing sites such as photobucket do upload the whole file from the computer (as far as I can tell) although what they do with it afterwards is anyone's guess. Copying the file shouldn't make a difference as the data they copy would be an exact replica of the file you provided, including the archive.

Very true.. to be perfectly honest, myself, I'm not even sure why I asked this question rather than using the best answering service available ..trial & error. Guess I was just too into the project to think about the obvious.

You should take a look at my steganography tutorial I posted this morning & let me know what you think! Biggrin
