The AJAX PM notification plugin is a very good plugin, and could be used here. A lot of PM's are sent out per day, and refreshing to see if you have a new PM could be very annoying at some points. With this plugin, you won't need to refresh to see the PM, it will pop up as the plugin refreshes itself.
