Importance Of Maths. - Enigma_mybb_import12474 - 06-06-2013

I once used to hate Maths immensely.Whenever I started to do Maths equations I was like this :headbash: literally. Who didn't hate Maths? Everyone in my class used to hate it. When the Mathematics period came, groans and moans were always heard. After fifteen minutes, yawns were heard and students started enjoy a few z's. It wasn't until the end of School life, when I finally started to actually love it. Below is an essay on the Importance Of Maths by Jay Prakash. He really conveyed the message well;

It is said that Mathematics is the gate and key of the Science. According to the famous Philosopher Kant, "A Science is exact only in so far as it employs Mathematics". So, all scientific education which does not commence with Mathematics is said to be defective at its foundation. Neglect of mathematics works injury to all knowledge.

One who is ignorant of mathematics cannot know other things of the World. Again, what is worse, who are ignorant are unable to perceive their own ignorance and do not seek any remedy. So Kant says, "A natural Science is a Science in so far as it is mathematical". And Mathematics has played a very important role in building up modern Civilization by perfecting all Science.

In this modern age of Science and Technology, emphasis is given on Science such as Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Medicine and Engineering. Mathematics, which is a Science by any criterion, also is an efficient and necessary tool being employed by all these Sciences. As a matter of fact, all these Sciences progress only with the aid of Mathematics. So it is aptly remarked, "Mathematics is a Science of all Sciences and art of all arts."

Mathematics is a creation of human mind concerned chiefly with ideas, processes and reasoning. It is much more than Arithmetic, more than Algebra more than Geometry. Also it is much more than Trigonometry, Statistics, and Calculus.

Mathematics includes all of them. Primarily mathematics is a way of thinking, a way of organizing a logical proof. As a way reasoning, it gives an insight into the power of human mind, so this forms a very valuable discipline of teaching-learning programmes of school subjects everywhere in the world of curious children. So the method and practice of teaching Mathematics should very carefully be built in different levels of school education.

In the pedagogical study of mathematics we mainly concern ourselves with two things; the manner in which the subject matter is arranged or the method the way in which it is presented to the pupils or the mode of presentation. Mathematics is intimately connected with everyday life and necessary to successful conduct of affairs. It is an instrument of education found to be in conformity with the needs of human mind.

Teaching of mathematics has its aims and objectives to be incorporated in the school curricula. If and when Mathematics is removed, the back-bone of our material civilization would collapse. So is the importance of Mathematics and its pedagogic.

So, the importance of maths in daily life? There are the obvious ones like making sure you have enough change for the bus, deciding whether the pair of jeans that are in the sale are actually the bargain of the year or not, and working out whether buying the 2kg packet of salted peanuts is actually better value than the 200g one, and debating whether you need 2kg of salted peanuts in the first place.
The question is then; How many of you actually like Mathematics?

RE: Impotance Of Maths. - Deque - 06-06-2013

I highly agree with you and I think that there is something wrong with the way math is teached at school, if people don't get how useful it is.
I learned this very late (the usefulness), at university, and that's also where I got the motivation to stick through it.
It is even more important if you are or want to be a programmer. You may be able to solve some tasks without it, but you will never become very good at programming, nor will you fully grasp certain algorithms, without some understanding in math.

RE: Impotance Of Maths. - Psycho_Coder - 06-06-2013

Mathematics is very important for daily life and mathematics has application in every aspect of life and in some way you'll find mathematics to be your mate every where. I agree with @Deque and whatever she said. So let me explain that to you a bit and for the other users whom this thread might interest. By the way I love maths :lub: and my college stuffs and with the projects I am working on will never let me get away from mathematics.

Here's some explanation for :- "The need of Mathematics in Computer Science"

Math is the basis and foundation of all computer science. A computer is something that calculates. And since calculations are the concepts of all mathematics, that is how they relate.

Applications of Mathematics in various fields of Computer Science :-
  • Cryptography
  • Computer Architecture.
  • Computer Graphics.
  • Game Development
  • Computer AI
    Many More....

There is actually a subfield of mathematics, discrete mathematics, specifically focused on a grab bag of mathematical topics with relevant application to computer science. As a matter of fact cryptography is a part of mathematics and without mathematics there will be no cryptology thereby no security. Now when we program we use algorithms to solve some problem. Computer sciences heavily rely on algorithms, which the latter in turn heavily relies on mathematics. Theoretical computer science strongly involves discrete mathematics. Discrete mathematics is basically the study of mathematical structures that are discrete rather than continuous, and so this theoretical branch of computer sciences involves a lot of mathematics, in the form of graphs, algorithms, computational geometry, quantum computation, algebra, computational number theory. In fact, the use of mathematics in computer sciences depends on the latter’s department. A beginner in programming may not need mathematics, but as the programmer advances through the level of difficulty, he / she will have to use more advanced mathematics.Even though we don’t see any, computers operate using binary digits, which is basically mathematics. Physics plays a role in certain computer science branches. And since mathematics and physics are hugely related, this only provides us with more proof on how much mathematics is in computer sciences. More mathematical applications in computer science are sets, probability and Boolean algebra.

Important Topics of mathematics that are important in computing field :-
  • Probability and Statistics.
  • Graph Theory
  • Numerical Analysis
  • Ring, Fields and Groups
  • Discrete mathematics
  • Matrix and Determinant

Believe me if you are interested in cryptography then you need to know statistics and matrix at an expert level

So to conclude, mathematics is considered a necessity for any successful computer scientist. All computer science applications require mathematics to some degree. To tackle the most challenging of programs, mathematics will be of huge aid.

You. You are one of the few people who get it. I can tell by the way you articulate. With so much other trash polluting the precious Internet, it's refreshing to read posts like this.

It's funny how mathematics is the pièce de résistance of humankind, one of our most powerful creations, yet is also one of the most fervently hated. That first paragraph of your OP is an exact mirror of my relationship with math. I too once hated it with a intense passion. Now, I nearly bow down and worship its influence.

I don't think there's no one in the world who would have such hatred for Maths like me (You can ask me sis there Wink ) but still I don't know how I manage to get pass that subject. Every time, it's a day before my maths paper I shiver, I can't sleep, I don't eat and severe headache and anger but now I've made my mind because the field that I choose has some minimal but good maths stuff and I'll have to get pass through it to have me dream completed Smile

@Deque I highly agree with the same thing, Maths isn't taught in a good manner. The term "Mathphobia" has been many time referred to as Not being able to understand maths due to improper way of teaching. In my country there are many Study Boards (Federal, Cambridge etc) They have different courses and all of them are taught in a rugged silly manner. Off course fast learners are going to grab it fast but what about the others?

I think we all agree on the same thing that Maths is one of those subjects which is important in our life. Most of us start by hating it while most us love it. Sooner or later, we come to realize that it is very important to us.
I agree with @Deque on the fact that our attitude towards Maths depends on how someone teaches it to us.

RE: Importance Of Maths. - xevenofhearts - 06-07-2013

I used to love math. Love it, favorite class, and I was really damn good at it. I still am, but I'm not as fond of it as I used to be. Mainly because math is taught (in my classes) straight out of the textbook, and less real teaching. I really just dont like the fact that I wont use much of what I learn. I've used some stuff I had learned in math class previously, but ended up having to re-teach myself, because none of it stuck. I feel like after a certain point math is something I learn when I need it. Of course, you cant skip to Calculus from addition and subtraction; you need to learn the material in between, but if I do need Calculus, i'll teach it and everything in between to myself. Everything I've learned in this school year I could barely repeat back to you; and I literally got out of school for summer 2 hours ago.

edit: To sum it up, I don't like it but I understand the importance.

RE: Importance Of Maths. - The 7th Sage - 06-07-2013

Boy do i loathe mathematics, algebra and geometry to be precise. In school I would score "A" in other subjects but a fat "F" in Math. Personally I have a feeling that Math is over hyped and focused in Asian countries (I'm from one btw). It does help determining a logical thinking level of a person to some extent but sometimes its just not needed. First of all it only helps into certain fields like someone above said "Computing". Even in computing its dependant what technology you are using. I could care less about High level Calculus when I'm developing an Android Application unless i'm involved in some type of hardware addressing.

Quote:One who is ignorant of mathematics cannot know other things of the World. Again, what is worse, who are ignorant are unable to perceive their own ignorance and do not seek any remedy.

This statement is so untrue, biased and narrow minded that I could just puke right now. Which is exactly why I hate the education system in my country. It basically makes students into believing, "if you are not good at Math you fail at life". I have been a math failure pretty much since my teenage years. I'm still considered one of most intellectual programmers in my department.

Well i think that all we hate at the start math and i think is only two possibilities why act like this:
1.the techers-they are bored of teaching -in all the school that i've been i see maybe one or two teachers (young ) how belive in what they teach, how give's the base and after let us play whith possiblilities.
2.the first aproach whith math for us- my son is only 2 elementary and teach the tables of multiplication.Tomorrow finished the year and already know untill 7. I think that the aproach to the math is more for becouse you need to learn and not learn whith passion and pleasure, not play and find the esamples of the math in the nature. On the last trimestry of 12 classe (high school) since we know that we have a week to exam nobody wants to go forward to write some exercices.I do.And i remain surprise that whith a lillte help for my teachers i could solve a integer(did i say right ) much advanced.I never has abble to solve and for annoing i discover that following a logic on what i do it is possible, i start to love the precise science(this what we name). Well i think that we need some time to mature and follow the logic becouse i became ready to learn,i became ready to understend and explain.
