Building my own pentest distro - RogueCoder - 05-28-2013 Hey guys So I've decided that I want to start building my own pentest distro. Yeah I know what you're thinking. "Oh God! Another one!? :headbash: We have too many already!". Well, my goal is not to create a distro to compete against Backbox, BackTrack/Kali, or anyone else. The reason is personal education only ![]() Now that being said I have a question: What distro would you recommend building on? I see many building on Ubuntu, but I've never been a big fan of it, and basically it wouldn't really be a major problem making one on it since everything is already set up. I've been thinking about Arch Linux, here I will have to configure most from scratch. Using Sabayon has also crossed my mind. But then I'm back to what I said earlier, since it's already configured and I just need to add the tools. But what I do like about Sabayon is that it provides access to the Gentoo package manager as well as its own and Gentoo is really quick on adding new updates. Any suggestions guys? ![]() RE: Building my own pentest distro - Ex094 - 05-28-2013 No Offense mate but I think it's a waste of time, there are already many Pentest Distro's out there that you can use, on the other hand their platform might be different but the tools are merely the same. I don't wish to discourage you on your project with this comment, but if you really want to make one then you should make it such so that it has a very marked difference from other pentest distros otherwise as I said before its just a waste of Precious time. I wish you good luck on your project and I am saying again that my comment is not to discourage you, If you need any help you can PM me ![]() RE: Building my own pentest distro - clik - 05-28-2013 (05-28-2013, 11:21 AM)Ex094 Wrote: No Offense mate but I think it's a waste of time, there are already many Pentest Distro's out there that you can use, on the other hand their platform might be different but the tools are merely the same. That is exactly why I wrote the first part ![]() ![]() The reason why I want to do this is because I want to learn much more about Linux ![]() It's just like programming. You can learn a lot from reading and using existing stuff. But you will never fully understand untill you build something yourself ![]() And I don't really consider diving deeper into Linux a waste of time ![]() Also the reason I wanted to do pentest distro is becuase I will not be able to keep my motivation strong if I make a Ubuntu/Mint clone ![]() RE: Building my own pentest distro - chmod - 05-28-2013 If you want to make it different, stay clear of debian based distributions. RPM based systems would be a decent choice (not that I'm biased in any way :whistle ![]() RE: Building my own pentest distro - Psycho_Coder - 05-28-2013 I agree with what @Ex094 said. You can learn for yourself that how the things work but I don't think its a good idea. Backbox is friendly and for beginners and it has many tools. So even if you don't want to compete against anything still I think its a bad idea. My preferable starting point would be from the TTY. No X, not KDE/GNOME/xfce, or any other pre installed tools.. I want to build and configure the whole thing myself ![]() Sidenote: If anyone else now want to say "this is a bad idea", don't leave a message. It's not worth your time ![]() ![]() RE: Building my own pentest distro - Linuxephus™ - 05-28-2013 Gentoo already has a Gentoo based Pentesting Distro. called Pentoo done by professionals here http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pentoo with the accomanying website listed as well. Perhaps an additional custom build from that one. RE: Building my own pentest distro - static_cast - 05-28-2013 Why don't you make a maximum-security configured distro! :haha: RE: Building my own pentest distro - RogueCoder - 05-28-2013 -- Update -- After some research I've made my decision and I'm going to use the Sabayon SpinBase as the foundation of this project ![]() SpinBase is a very minimal environment that can be used for many different purposes: didactical, home server deployment, but even for custom Sabayon ISO images creation, using our tool called Molecule) Looking forward to this journey ![]() ![]() |
