@JesseH: The code seems unnecessarily tedious. Don't you have a dictionary in Lua to avoid all these if-ss-for-statements?
And maybe a function that turns the input character to an uppercase (or lowercase one) so you don't have two checks everywhere?
I think you can reduce the lines of codes a lot.
