a link to a website is a backlink from the website's perspective.

Backlinks are has the name suggest links back to your own site/blog.their are many site which provide backlinks for free just google for it.backlinks can help you increase your google search rank/traffic.

Hi,
To see description of backlinks look at: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Backlinks
tl;dr of the above would be something like:
"Backlink is, when somebody posts a link to your website on other website."
For example, the link to wikipedia that I posted above is a backlink for wikipedia.
Now how does it work/help?
Basically, a backlink is like a vouch for your website. Google, Yahoo, Bing and other search engines sort of "count" these links. And the more you have, the more important your website looks = they put it higher in search results.
How to get them?
Just post links to your website on other websites. There are automatic tools, but they don't really help that much.
How to put them on your website?
Just post links to other websites on your website

try this for back links
To get Free back backlinks, adhere to below steps;
Go to http://www.imtalk.org/cmps_index.php?pageid=IMT-Website-Submitter
Add You website/blog url.
Add Targeting Keyword for you Blog home page.
Select option [no. of back links 50 to 2509]
Click on Submit and wait for system to submit it to all URLs.
After Submission
Add all the links in to http://www.linklicious.me, they will index all the URLs. So you get more benefits.
