Best linux to host a server - TechSaavy - 03-07-2013 Hello again! Since I am going to buy a laptop soon, I would turn my desktop to a server. Here are the specifications of the desktop: Intel Pentium 4 Northwood (3.2) 4 GB DDR3 RAM 1 GB Graphic card My question is, which Liux distro would be best to use the least of memory and cpu power? I've read that one of the best ones to this was Lubuntu and Arch Linux. Which one is best for this task? RE: Best linux to host a server - Charon - 03-07-2013 From what I've heard Arch is using the least of memory and CPU power, and it's really advanced too(if you're into Linux.) So I'd go for Arch. I think it's the best for you. I think a more experienced Linux user than me could explain it better though. I am using Linux 3/4 months now. RE: Best linux to host a server - w00t - 03-07-2013 Depends on what you want. If you think the "tree" command looks cool, you should stick with a GUI distro. If not, scratch the GUI, it eats valuable resources. RE: Best linux to host a server - 3SidedSquare - 03-08-2013 Depends on the server, if it's going to be resource heavy (MMO games, large scale project) go with FreeBSD, If you're just going to make a web service out of it, stick with Arch Linux RE: Best linux to host a server - Dismas - 03-08-2013 I'm surprised you guys recommend arch for servers. If it's for a webserver I'd recommend CentOS. RE: Best linux to host a server - 3SidedSquare - 03-08-2013 (03-08-2013, 04:46 AM)The Anarchist Wrote: I'm surprised you guys recommend arch for servers. My experience wit CentOS was buggy, and generally annoying at best RE: Best linux to host a server - cxS - 03-08-2013 (03-07-2013, 11:43 PM)w00t Wrote: Depends on what you want. Unless you were to install something like awesomeWM for it.. RE: Best linux to host a server - TechSaavy - 03-08-2013 Well, basically it would be a TeamSpeak and Minecraft server, so I'm not sure abouth wich one is best for it. Thanks for the recommendations though ![]() RE: Best linux to host a server - Dismas - 03-08-2013 (03-08-2013, 04:54 AM)3SidedSquare Wrote:(03-08-2013, 04:46 AM)The Anarchist Wrote: I'm surprised you guys recommend arch for servers. If it's for a webserver I'd recommend CentOS. Not too long ago Anarchy Forums was hosted on a VPS running CentOS. Personally, I would recommend it for less technical users as Arch might be a bit painful for someone who's just interested in a game server. Don't get me wrong, Arch is my favorite distro, but it's unlikely I'd use it for hosting anything. Will Arch work for hosting? Without a doubt, but it will take much more time to set up if you plan to do anything fancy. Hosting a gameserver on Arch might just be short of living-hell depending on what game it is, etc... With Arch, you have the option of having a GUI, but that's up to you. One thing about Arch is that you can configure almost everything when installing it. That can be a good thing, but also a bad thing. If you're only used to using Ubuntu, Fedora, or anything like that and you're just setting up a gameserver save yourself the trouble. RE: Best linux to host a server - Complibur - 03-18-2013 FreeBSD is the best but it is not linux it is unix ! |
