Anonymous is not a group, anonymous is an idea which is created by a collective of people on 4chan. It started on /b/ where people were able to post 100% anonymous without giving out any private details out.
The old anonymous which were basicly on 4chan were only there to post "the teh lulz" but at a certain point they changed and became more mature and suddenly they started to fight for different things such as: Chanology, Freedom of Information.
You can't say if they're "good or bad" since everyone can be in Anonymous, basicly its a title you can use the express yourself without using your own identity.
Sadly many people started to "Define" anonymous, which made this idea look more and more like a group of people on IRC's.
About the "threat" to the internet, i would say no. They are powerful but actually they have fought for many good things, one of the things i like is Freedom of Information. I support wikileaks and their operation where they successfully attacked Visa and so on for stopping donations to Wikileaks was for me the best thing so far. Also the Chanology section which is against Scientology.
But anonymous is basicly pretty much what you want it to be, it's your subjective opinions.

You're not really hiding behind an ip adress, that's what makes you able to get traced\tracked.
