.com is the most popular domain extension. Most webmasters prefer good domain names with a .com extension.

.com is an extension . It stands for "commercial" site although most people prefer it anyway, as its the most popular and even included in most smartphone keyboards.

It is called the Top Level Domain or TLD. For a very long time these were privately managed by organizations running the root servers and having direct lines to the backbone.
I recently retweeted an article on twitter about how the new program is going to work where you can purchase and manage your own TLD. Finally my dreams have come true to be able to own a TLD, it's just way too rich for my blood. Hopefully this will effectively drop the rates of domain names.
