Blackout
Read the announcement. It's important.

I'm not sure if everyone got to read the announcement left on Pastebin, so I've provided it below.
Spoiler: Old Announcement Message
Hey guys,

Yeah, I've resorted to using Pastebin. I can't be bothered to set up another server in the mean time, so I'm redirecting SL to this page. If you haven't noticed, we've been having issues with our hosting. OVH shut us off, and now our new host is giving us some trouble. I'm doing my best, but unfortunately, these companies aren't. It's understandable that care as little as they do, it's their dayjob. That does, however, make things quite disappointing for us.

So, a couple of days ago (at the start of the downtime), Netherlands police supposedly seized the server our VPS was on. Given our host's reputation, I believed that something like this would never occur. As legal and low-key as Sinisterly is, I never anticipated such an issue. The server was a temporary hosting solution and we were planning on switching this week, after previous downtime. Our hosts believe it will only be a matter of time before the servers are back online.

"Hello, two of our nodes, one of them which your server is on, has been seized by the Netherlands police. Two clients were doing illegal activity. We are still awaiting update from the datacenter and police." - Hosting Company

What happens next? We wait. I have no idea how long it will be before the men in blue return our server and all I can guarantee is that Sinisterly will come back online as soon as I get access to our server. The alternative of waiting, would be to use an outdated backup, which no one wants. My personal guess is that we should be back up by Tuesday at the latest.

On the up side, it's worth mentioning that I have some really amazing plans for Sinisterly when it comes back up. During the downtime, I've had a lot more free time, and I've been coming up with plenty of great ideas. I won't reveal much now, but let's just say that members will get more of a say in moderation and how the community is run.

Sincerely,

Oni
Owner of Sinisterly

NOTE: The servers were not seized because of Sinisterly, at least to my knowledge. I assume the reason the servers were taken is fraud or something super illegal. Be aware that our hosts are offshore and allow pretty much everything except child pornography.

----------------------- UPDATE -----------------------

First, I found why our server was seized:
https://www.europol.europa.eu/content/global-action-against-dark-markets-tor-network

So, I contacted Ecatel, the people who own the server we were on. I asked when we would get our stuff back:
"That will take a long time probably Sad"
"Long time being how long? The VPS is crucial to my business. I will pay anything for the contents of it."
"i have no answer for you, we are not the police."
"Have they not given you some form of timeframe? Would $100-200 be able to get us it sooner?"
"sir, police doesnt care. they dont care about us or you. they are the law. they think fuck them. i asked the tech guy he said maybe monday, now i cannot even reach them. it can take 2 days but it can also take a year. they are legal criminals. they NEVER EVER should take this data, we are working with a lawyer to see what we can do against it but takes time."
"This coming Monday?"
"no the monday which was beginning of this week Sad"

I do not believe that we were targeted. I believe there were hidden services that were breaking the law on our server. I am not sure how long it will take to get our data back, but I am doing my best to contact all parties involved. If you would like to be able to communicate with other members, I suggest joining the Skype group chat. Add me on Skype to join it: oni_sl

For those of you that don't know, on November 6th we went offline. I contacted our host, LibertyVPS, requesting information about the downtime. For those that don't know, LibertyVPS uses Ecatel servers. Initially, they claimed they were having "network issues". Later they told us what really happened, which ended up being much worse. "Hello, two of our nodes, one of them which your server is on, has been seized by the Netherlands police. Two clients were doing illegal activity. We are still awaiting update from the datacenter and police."

"Fuck" was the first word that fluttered out of my mouth. I promptly asked them if they had any backups they could give us. Before had moved to this VPS, we had offsite backups set up. However, we hadn't set up backups on the VPS yet. To my disappointment, they said they didn't have any backups available. "We are very sorry sir. We use RAID to make sure that if a harddrive fails, we still have data of our customers. There are many clients like you who are really mad right now, and so are we. This ruins both the business of the datacenter, ours, and our clients (like you). The police had no order to seize the whole nodes, but only to image the harddrives. We are awaiting an update from the datacenter."

Around this point, I received an email from a family member, with a URL to a news article about this:
https://www.europol.europa.eu/content/global-action-against-dark-markets-tor-network

Code:
On 6 November, law enforcement and judicial agencies around the globe undertook a joint action against dark markets running as hidden services on Tor* network. 16 European countries,** alongside counterparts from the United States, brought down several marketplaces as part of a unified international action from Europol’s operational coordination centre in The Hague. The action aimed to stop the sale, distribution and promotion of illegal and harmful items, including weapons and drugs, which were being sold on online ‘dark’ marketplaces. Operation Onymous, coordinated by Europol’s European Cybercrime Centre (EC3), the FBI, the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement’s (ICE), Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) and Eurojust, resulted in 17 arrests of vendors and administrators running these online marketplaces and more than 410 hidden services being taken down. In addition, bitcoins worth approximately USD 1 million, EUR 180 000 euro in cash, drugs, gold and silver were seized. The dark market Silk Road 2.0 was taken down by the FBI and the U.S. ICE HIS, and the operator was arrested. The Joint Cybercrime Action Taskforce (J-CAT), located at Europol’s headquarters, supported the operation. The J-CAT was created to serve as a platform for targeted operations against global criminal networks and infrastructure, carried out by EC3 and our colleagues in EU Member States and beyond. “Today we have demonstrated that, together, we are able to efficiently remove vital criminal infrastructures that are supporting serious organised crime. And we are not 'just' removing these services from the open Internet; this time we have also hit services on the Darknet using Tor where, for a long time, criminals have considered themselves beyond reach. We can now show that they are neither invisible nor untouchable. The criminals can run but they can’t hide. And our work continues....”, says Troels Oerting, Head of EC3. “Our efforts have disrupted a website that allows illicit black-market activities to evolve and expand, and provides a safe haven for illegal vices, such as weapons distribution, drug trafficking and murder-for-hire,” says Kumar Kibble, regional attaché for HSI in Germany. “HSI will continue to work in partnership with Europol and its law enforcement partners around the world to hold criminals who use anonymous Internet software for illegal activities accountable for their actions.” “Working closely with domestic and international law enforcement, the FBI and our partners have taken action to disrupt several websites dedicated to the buying and selling of illegal drugs and other unlawful goods. Combating cyber criminals remains a top priority for the FBI, and we continue to aggressively investigate, disrupt, and dismantle illicit networks that pose a threat in cyberspace”, says Robert Anderson, FBI Executive Assistant Director of the of the Criminal, Cyber, Response and Services Branch. * Tor, an acronym for The Onion Router, is a free network designed to anonymise your real Internet Protocol (IP) address by routing your traffic through many servers of the Tor network. Tor is used by a variety of people for both illicit and licit purposes, a fact that has also been acknowledged in the complaint against Ross William Ulbricht, accused of being the main administrator of the original Silk Road. ** Bulgaria, Czech Republic, Finland, France, Germany, Hungary, Ireland, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Netherlands, Romania, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, United Kingdom. Coincidence? Right? Except the date is the 6th of November and our server happened to be in the Netherlands. Instantly, I realized that the servers were seized because of this. Obviously we weren't a target of the operation. It's likely there were hidden services on the same box as us. Immediately, I realized things had gone from bad to worse. I'd definitely need to talk to someone other than LibertyVPS.

I attempted contacting Ecatel directly, asking when we'd receive our data back, as talking to LibertyVPS proved pointless:
"Could I receive the contact information for the police that seized it? I may have my legal representative contact them."
"you can contact the dutch police and ask to redirect to [snip]. then you have the right unit. thanks."

At this point, my options as an administrator are to wait on a response from the following people:
  • LibertyVPS
  • Ecatel
  • Dutch law enforcement (which I emailed)
  • My legal representative

In the mean time, Sinisterly will be a bit different.

[ The Plan ]

If you didn't notice, I have restored a month old backup (prior to the Hackcommunity merge) and deleted all threads and posts. The plan is to run off this backup until I have access to a current backup. After I obtain access to our VPS, I will merge this forum into the real one. Things like reputation, awards, and likes will not be transferred. I know this isn't a great situation and it has taken its toll on all of us. Personally, I have spent a lot of time worrying about it, and I've been having trouble relaxing/sleeping.

It's asked that you report any issues you have, but not bother staff unless necessary. If you're missing an award, and it can wait - wait to message me. Be aware that I'm obscenely busy and I'm helping others too. Your posts and threads have been deleted and will be re-added when I receive access to the VPS. This is a temporary solution, so please bear with me and be patient. I will keep everyone updated on the status of Sinisterly. I hope to return everything that was on Sinisterly, prior to the 6th of November.

Have a great day!

RE: Blackout - Eclipse - 11-12-2014

So to sum it up, one of the 27 services taken down was hosted on the same server as Sinisterly and europol is gay... Cool.

Over 400 services were actually seized. Only 2 servers were taken from our host, though.
