Have you ever swatted someone? - Crypt - 08-06-2014

First time I ever tried to swat someone (5 minutes ago) it was a colossal failure.

I made up the most bullshit story and my biggest mistake was telling them that I was at my house, which led to the operator asking for my address. That's when I hung up and laughed at myself for being so stupid. The whole time I was on the call I was panicking and shaking like I had a firework up my ass.

When was the first time you ever tried to swat someone and what was the story you told them?

I've never done it to someone, and I'd never want to. What a lot of young people fail to realize, is the impact they can have on other lives by swatting someone. Law enforcement (namely volunteers), have to take the time out of their day to come and deal with the situation, and you could be preventing them from saving people. Other catastrophes can also occur, as I've heard of household pets being shot and people being traumatized. Swatters need to realize that they aren't just affecting the person they hate, but their families, volunteers, and others.

That's not to say some people don't know the impact they can have, as some are simply apathetic in nature (like most adolescents). However, it's a truly sad thing if you dislike someone that much, and your only option is to send the SWAT team. Everyone has a different reason for swatting people, but that doesn't change how pathetic it is. I don't like that it's a part of hacker-culture nowadays, and I wish it would stop. People need to learn to get along and stop doing childish shit like this.

While I agree with you, I didn't think that swatting was a part of hacker-culture. I thought it was the next most annoying thing up from calling a pizza joint and ordering 20 of them, solely because they got mad at someone and this is the most annoying thing they can do at getting them back.

It shouldn't be, but it sort of is. People that have done it would probably like to claim it's a form of "Social Engineering".

Technically, it is social engineering, but that does not make it ethically ok. It's a babyish thing to do and the usual perpetrators are 13 year olds that got pissed off on the internet.

@Oni is this thread not against any of SL's rules?

It's allowed, sadly. Although I'd much rather this thread be for discussion of why swatting is bad and how @Crypt should feel bad. No flaming.

Personally, I think it's an incredibly dumb thing to do. I agree with everything Oni said. Also, if you get caught, your and/or your parents will end up paying big time. It's not that unlikely that you'll get caught either.

I'm sure many people know what happened with Oni and know that the idiot who did it, got caught. You said you were shaking... With good reason. You should be worried if you're going to try something like that, because of all of the consequences that follow. I hope people realise how stupid it is and this shit stops.

I don't mean to put you down Crypt, but I really want you to avoid trying it ever again.
