Technology - Helpful or Hurtful? - Equinox - 07-22-2014

As made apparent in the video, technology changes how we act, and what we do.

What I want to talk about, or debate, is technology. Does it help us or hurt us?

Spoiler: Watch the Video First if You Haven't
As in the video, the man met a woman that he ended up marrying, and having a life with, but if he were to pay more attention to his phone than life, he would never have had the life that he does. Now, I see it that technology makes jobs, and allows us to live, but it isn't necessarily positive in the same sense.

So how do you view the topic?

I've seen this video thrown around a lot.
In my opinion technology is a good thing. It enables everyone to create content, and everyone to read it as well, in terms you guys will understand... RW - Read-Write culture.

Here's a really interesting TED talk on that.

I'm sorry for the crappy quality. Here's a better quality version on TED.com - http://www.ted.com/talks/larry_lessig_says_the_law_is_strangling_creativity
I believe it is very good that we have technology. We can share knowledge, but most importantly contribute to that knowledge - it can be us, not just professionals with special permissions and access materials.

Technology is great for a mutlitude of reasons.

A) It creates a lot of jobs.

B) It provides instant information good, and bad,

C) Porn.

D) It expands us and advances us a a species.

It has its ups and downs, but ultimately I find it to be a good thing. Considering it has had a huge impact on my life and probably everyone here, it's hard to picture ourselves without it and claim it's a bad thing.

Also, that video is grossly over-exaggerated propaganda.

It'd be a incredibly stupid to say that we need to get rid of technology. I think some people need to learn to live with it, and not allow it to be a distraction. It can distract me sometimes, although I have always preferred meeting face-to-face and conversing with people to Skype calls.

I absolutely love technology, but there's been a few instances where it's been a bit detrimental to me.

For one thing, my family doesn't really have dinner conversations anymore at restaurants while we're waiting for our food, we're all on our tablets or smartphones. One family sitting across from us who was just having a regular talk with each other just looked at us funny, and I couldn't help but feel so uncomfortable compared to them, I never use my anymore while sitting next to others, and try engaging in conversations when no one else is.

Technology, like most inventions, has its ups and downs. For one: it helps us share information and talk to people we might have never been able to meet before. Technology is used in practically every single school now and it's helping kids learn and become even more intelligent than past generations (take a genius level kid now and compare him to a genius level kid 30 years ago and you're probably going to notice quite a difference). But there are some massive drawbacks to having technology in our everyday lives: we now have organizations in every single government system trying to completely take away our privacy and watch everything we do on the internet (talked about in this thread: https://www.sinister.ly/Thread-Nude-photos-of-strangers-are-a-fringe-benefit-for-NSA-employees-says-Snowden). You also have, like what the guy in this video said, people constantly just reading on there phones and whatnot, but you also have kids (like a lot of us here at Sinisterly) who sit in our rooms most of the day and don't try and have a social life but just chat with people on Skype all day (I am also guilty of this). But in the end, technology has helped the world improve quite a bit, such as new technology being born letting us travel out into space, but then again on the other hand you have teenagers will get one bad comment on a social media post and end up wanting to kill themselves and kids getting obese from sitting at their computers all day eating pizza and not playing sports or just going outside in general.

TL;DR technology has helped improve the world as a whole a lot but it has also ruined it in other ways.

I think social media has changed society more for the worse than technology as a whole has.

I think there's a difference between technology being good or bad, and whether our reliance on it is good or bad.

It makes me sad to see a kid who has never gone out to play because he's stuck to a tablet. I just think oh god look at how much he's missing! Then again, when I hear other adults complaining about kids being on their phone all the time, I realise they would have been exactly the same as us, given the opportunity. Technology, ultimately, is good, in my opinion. It allows medicine to advance, man to explore further. We're able to share knowledge instantly and attempt to improve human life. Some has caused issues environmentally and even on a local/personal scale. However, I think the pros outweigh the cons. Though, it's not quite that black and white.
