AF News - 3rd Edition! - Phytrix - 01-12-2013 ![]() Contests Firstly, the MOTM competition was launched a few weeks ago. The competition is nearing its end, although there is still time to vote if you haven't already. There are 5 members nominated, 3 of which are tied on 4 votes at the time of writing this, one on 1 vote, and one on 0 votes. This is still anyone's competition, so be sure to make your vote count! This week's lottery also ended a few days ago, which was won by The Anarchist (again!). The pot was 3,700 AP. Good luck to everyone who enters the current lottery. The referral contest was also completed since the last edition and was won by Phytrix with no contenders for second and third place. Database Rollback Earlier this week, due to an internal issue, the AF database was rolled back a little over half a day. Although a decent amount of posts were lost and a few threads, this rollback prevented us losing more posts and threads, hence making it the best for the forum. The issue has been dealt with, and in result a fix has been implemented. The fix prevents users (excluding Staff) from deleting posts that are older than a week. Luckily the backup wasn't too far behind, although the issue still resulted in a few members losing AP, accounts being deleted (recent registrations), posts and threads. Nerdchat Earlier this week, The Anarchist purchased Nerdchat for a currently undisclosed(?) amount of money. AF will be attempting to transfer a decent amount of the current Nerdchat members to AF, as well as promoting the site as is (advertising) before we merge Nerdchat into AF. The merging may still take a few weeks, as AF is disallowed the purchase of stickies on HF while Nerdchat isn't, hence allowing maximum advertising, although the merge should bring AF a lot of new members plus Nerdchat's database (all their posts and threads), which is currently being sorted into appropriate sections and grammar/spelling edited. ![]() BreShiE - Rate This Design! Magic - I think that having the whole AF News read out by voice and uploaded as a video would largely benefit it as a whole. The End - In my opinion, AF News needs more people that are willing to apply and stay active. I was surprised to see how lightly the due dates were handled. I personally handed my work 2 hours late, fearing for my brand new membership in the AF News. You can imagine my face when there was work still pending days later. However, the high quality of the articles surprised me as well. ![]() Club Fire Leaves Hundreds Dead 233 people (and possibly counting) have died in a nightclub fire in southern Brazil yesterday, police officials report. After a band set off fireworks at the Kiss club in Santa Maria, it was reported that a fire began and swept through the club. In the rush many were crushed from stampedes, many killed by the fire itself and many also killed from the toxic fumes. On top of this, many more were seriously injured. All names have been released except for 3 unidentified bodies. Most of the victims were between 16 and 20. The death toll was originally 245, also was revised later on. It's believed that there may be bodies near-by, although it's still unsure whether there are more bodies to be found. Thousands Of Wild Crocodiles 15,000 crocodiles have been released in South Africa's floods. The owner was forced to open the gates, releasing all of the crocodiles, amid heavy rain and flash flooding. So far, it's believed that more than half have been recaptured, although this means that there are still thousands on the loose. Among the flooding, where many people are trapped in their flooded homes, it's only imaginable how much of an extra strain this many crocodiles would add to the already dramatic event. Some of the crocs have been found over a hundred kilometres away. ![]() Rick Ross Targeted By Drive-By Shooting Rick Ross was target on a shooting in Florida during the morning of January 28th (around 5am), the day of his birthday, after leaving a nearby restaurant. The shooter(s), on another vehicle, fortunately missed all of the shots, which sum up around 20. The bullets hit the shops and commerce behind Rick Ross’ car. Nobody was killed or injured, due to the unusual time of the shooting. Rick Ross, whilst being shot at, tried to get away and crashed his Rolls Royce into a building. No one inside the car was injured, but Rick Ross received a crimson wakeup call on his mortality. Chris Brown And Frank Ocean Brawl Chris Brown and Frank Ocean, two rather famous (infamous in Chris' case) R&B artists, were involved in a brawl last week, and Frank plans on pressing charges. It reportedly initiated in a parking lot outside of a recording studio where Frank made a comment about it being his studio (sentimentally). It's believed that Chris Brown initiated the brawl after Frank Ocean refused his handshake which was offered to try to ease the situation. It was originally thought that no charges would be pressed, although apparently that's changed. Chris had left by the time the police arrived and Frank gave an official statement on the matter. An official investigation has also been launched. Music Videos Spoiler: ![]() EA Launches Origin Mac Alpha Client EA have announced that they plan to launch Origin for Mac "soon" and has started accepting testers to try it out. The alpha will only be available to a few thousand users, and as an incentive, EA is offering participants a free copy of PopCap game Bookworm. Except from the lack of a store tab (Which shall be implimented upon full release) and the ability to stream live to Twitch.tv the client should behave exactly as the PC version does. Users will require a Mac running OS X 10.6.8 or newer with an Intel Core 2 Duo processor or better to download the client. Sony Fined £250k Sony has been fined a total of £250,000 after 77 million accounts were affected in April 2011.The Information Commissioner's Office said the attack was preventable, and that there was "no disguising that Sony is a business that should have known better". Sony will have the right to appeal this decision and they intend to reverse the ruling. Sony has stated that it "strongly disagrees" with the decision. The company added: "PlayStation Europe notes that the ICO recognises Sony was the victim of 'a focused and determined criminal attack' and that 'there is no evidence that encrypted payment card details were accessed', and that 'personal data is unlikely to have been used for fraudulent purposes'." The corporation's chief executive, Kaz Hirai apologised for the breach one month after the attack brought the whole network down. Red and Blue PS3s to be released in UK Sony has revealed that there will be a release of two new colours of Playstation and will be available from February 15th in the United Kingdom. The consoles will come with a built in 500GB hard drive and will be supplied with two controllers in a matching colour. North American customers can instead pick up the white edition of the Playstation 3 which will come with one controller and a year-long PlayStation Plus subscription. "This year, PlayStation 3 continues to grow from strength to strength with a huge line up of exclusive AAA titles and brand new franchises including The Last of Us, Beyond and Puppeteer," PlayStation Europe said in their statement on the matter. ![]() The Brand New HTC 8x Windows Phone This brand new mobile is 132.35 x 66.2 x 10.12 mm and has a 4.3 inch touch screen, equipped with the infamous Gorilla Glass. No need to say that it is running Windows Phone 8. Unfortunately, it has a mere 1.5 GHz, but its camera is bound to stun the audience. The main camera is nothing more than an 8 megapixel camera with auto focus, LED flash, and a BSI sensor, for capturing photos in low light. The main camera also features 1080p video recording and Dedicated HTC ImageChip for clearer and sharper images and a faster focus. The 2.1 ultra-wide-angle camera has, just like the main camera, 1080p video recording and Dedicated HTC ImageChip. Vine – The Twitter Video Sharing Service Twitter announced their new project called Vine, which will allow users to share videos up to six seconds to other users. Vine will co-act with Twitter and Facebook, as it will deliver these small videos to both. The videos will be like a GIF with sound. Vine, is like a Video-Instagram, which over all, isn't a very visionary idea at all. However, unlike Instagram, with Vine, the sharing process is a lot more debilitated. With Instagram, you can take a picture of basically anything, and then digitally save it from being just another low-quality image (Yes I am talking about Instagram Filters) while videos can’t be edited so easily on a mobile. Local Manufacturing Tim Cook, Apple CEO announced that they will be spending 100 million to bring production of the Mac Computers back to the United States, manufacturing its own products locally for a change. Tim Cook says that Apple had been planning to do so for a long time, and 2013 is the year. In fact many of the new Mac computers have written “Assembled in USA”. Tim Cook explains that he wanted to do something more substantial, rather than just assembly, which would be easier for them. Seems like there will be many job offers in the USA! “We could have quickly maybe done just assembly, but it’s broader because we wanted to do something more substantial. So we’ll literally invest over $100 million. This doesn't mean that Apple will do it ourselves, but we’ll be working with people, and we’ll be investing our money.” ![]() AF News Team

Next time we’ll do a little research before we post something that is submitted to us. Sorry about that. This video might still be a clip of the brawl that occurred, but it’s definitely not Frank Ocean in the clip. It could still be a member of his entourage.
