Truecrypt Development Ceases, Speculations and More - Edward - 05-29-2014 Link: http://truecrypt.sourceforge.net/ It's been officially announced on Sourceforge that development for Truecrypt is over. Scarily, they are recommending that people switch to BitLocker (which is managed by the fiends over at Microsoft). There's been speculation as to what happened. Some say that the developers found a security hole in Truecrypt, while others are saying the Sourceforge was hacked. There are also a few other ideas floating around too. The Wikileaks Twitter gave a bit of insight on the matter: Code: "Truecrypt has released an update saying that it is insecure and development has been terminated http://truecrypt.sf.net"
"the style of the announcement is very odd; however we believe it is likely to be legitimate and not a simple defacement"
"the new executable contains the same message and is cryptographically signed. We believe that there is either a power conflict.."
"in the dev team or psychological issues, coersion of some form, or a hacker with access to site and keys."Thankfully Linux users can switch to LUKS encryption right off the bat, but Windows users aren't exactly given many alternatives. Truecrypt or BitLocker. Pretty worrying, right? You can see the most recent changes to Truecrypt here: https://github.com/warewolf/truecrypt/compare/master...7.2 What are your thoughts? Any of you using Truecrypt currently? Truecrypt Development Ceases, Speculations and More - Adorapuff - 05-30-2014 They are just mad that the guys auditing it got more donations in a week than they did in 10 years. I think we should donate a lot of money to a php audit lol RE: Truecrypt Development Ceases, Speculations and More - Christ - 05-30-2014 No, and I switched to LUKS full disk encryption a while ago, I think this is a repost btw. I could be wrong, but seems familiar. Probably another forum I am thinking of. RE: Truecrypt Development Ceases, Speculations and More - Cosmic - 06-02-2014 It's a shame, but the fact that almost everyone became dependent on the same, old tool to provide encryption for sensitive data without ever particularly questioning it's integrity was just a bomb waiting to go off. AxCrypt is the only other easy to use tool I could pull up on windows, but it's not like I have much need to encrypt things anyway. Anyone that actually uses a Microsoft tool for encryption is retarded. |
