Philosophical Quotes #1 - Eclipse - 04-13-2014

Hey,

This is a new series I will be starting with the help of @Cressi (hopefully). I will quote, a quote that I or Cressi think worthy, and you can discuss it below. I hope you look forward to this as much as I do.

"It is the mark of an educated mind to be able to entertain a thought without accepting it" - Aristotle

Thank you,
Aurora

I couldn't agree any more. So many people today who are open minded just except what they hear as true. Not too many people question what they are told and actually think about it.

Entertaining a thought isn't believing it, that's the whole point of this quote. The ability to argue for either side of an argument and understand why people hold differing opinions is a mark of intelligence.

I do think this is true, but slightly false in an aspect. Which I can't really type as it's 9AM and I'm on my phone. Another quote I love is in my signature.

Could you please elaborate? I'm intrigued.

Ha, irony.

Goes hand in hand with a quote I rather agree with:

"Accept nothing, challenge everything."

For a piece of information, especially abstract, it has to beat me before I accept it as true.

That is literally the exact opposite of OPs quote. The information shouldn't have to conquer you for you to understand and accept it.

Kind of like how religion has been for me in my life. I feel it's essential to be able to grow as a person.

I fail to see how that's the exact opposite, and seeing as how 'conquering' is a subjective term in this context, I would recommend clarifying your side of it.
