It doesn't really make sense to me, could you root a router possibly? I imagine it'd be like loading a custom firmware or something like that?

Yes. Look up the "moon router worm". It uses a command injection in Linksys devices to get root access.

But this is only linksys, no other routers? And this is pretty much the only way?
If I come across one that isnt linksys, what should I do?

The particular attack hit only Linksys. No one said you can't do more with another bug.

Yes, you can root any router that lets you upload firmware updates. See DD-WRT for more.

basically all routers have embedded *nix systems which run the web daemon and often even ssh or telnet. actually getting to a command line however often poses quite a challenge, thankfully though routers tend to have poor security (as they are almost always only LAN, meaning they are not accessible by people not connected to your wireless network) and no-one ever updates their routers software.So in the end lots of routers tend to be exploitable.
