Would This Make Me a Bad Person? - Oni - 03-26-2014
So, I'm considering offering SP for money. Generally I've been against the idea, as it could technically allow people to purchase status. However, I've noticed that the money I've received has actually benefited the forum a lot. For example, I have managed to cover both the cost of domain renewal and hosting for this month. I am also working on improving the forum's theme. It means that I don't have to pay directly out of my own pocket every month and we aren't at risk of missing the hosting bill when I am low on cash. The site is still non-profit, meaning all money goes back into the site, although it would place less stress on me if other people helped cover the bill.
Yes, I can cover expenses on my own without doing so. Would I rather not? Definitely.

Ehhh, I'm against it. This was one thing I've noticed and enjoyed that was unique about this forum.
I kind of feel bad being against it since it'll help you and us. I mean, if I was rich I'd just donate myself and pay the hosting and domain renewal. But that's my opinion;do what you gottta do.

I do agree, it makes us unique. However, at the same time, there are people willing to donate money for SP. That's money that could be used for advertising or anything else. I would also make the price relatively high.

Honestly, you might disagree with this and if so I understand. But keep the SP as it is, but allow users to purchase points if they'd like, possibly like making bundles? That way users are still earning SP, but if they want to get more they can purchase them.
/If not, I say just go for it, as you said it benefits the site. I'm sure the members would understand.

Its pretty debatable, but I think you should go for it. A lot of forums do pay for posts and a lot have a currency system like this one, it'd be a nice bridge between the two.

I think you should do it for the site's sake. At least until you can do things such as upgrade the theme and what not. Maybe you should make it limited. Like, there's only a set amount of SP that can be bought per month. I like what you're doing with the points and having them be pretty valuable, but sometimes money becomes a necessity, and you have to do what you have to do to keep the site running. Your members should understand.

Just make the price high so we don't have too many people buying it, but just enough to pay bills.

Ultimately it just depends on what you value more. Keeping it the way it is preserves some uniqueness in our forum and also sets a higher level of prestige and accomplishment that comes with upgrading. Almost a new level of respect seeing someone who has stuck here for a while and you know they had to work for it.
On the other hand, if branching out and attempting to quickly grow this forum is what you think we need, then maybe more money for that is worth what you give up. Advertising can be a hit and miss, and some will say that the money that goes into it, isn't worth the output, but I'm sure the money can be used elsewhere like you said.
