Or you could get a .com domain for $.99 at GoDaddy, which is a trusted source.

Dont use Godaddy.
I always used to get my domains from them, but they do not care about you.
My friend recieved a DMCA notice asking him to remove a link on his website and they sent the same email to godaddy and this is what happened:

They charged him $70 just because they had to email him.

I don't use godaddy because they supported SOPA and PIPA, though they removed their support later.
