How do you deal with sibling rivalry? - True2marie - 01-28-2014

I have 4 siblings. After becoming an adult, I found out that a few of them were competing with me. This idea never crossed my mind before because I am very different from them. They are extremely athletic and I, on the contrary, am book smart.

Unfortunately, sibling rivalry has caused a rift in my relationship with me. I hate having the feeling that when things go wrong in my life, they are happy. As a result, I don't communicate much with any of them anymore.

How do you deal with sibling rivalry?

Simple.

Take them by the throat. Shake them up. Teach them who runs shit.

That has never been a problem for me. I only have one brother, and he is six years younger than I am. I always tried to take care of him. He used to get on my nerves sometimes, and he still does at times when I'm around him, but we've never had any real problems.

I think sibling rivalry is in many cases unavoidable-- a friend of mine is really into musical theater where all his brothers are baseball stars. They poke fun at him a lot but ultimately their differences in interest lead them to mind their own business.

I have had the opposite-- for most of my life, my brother (2 years younger) has had mostly the same interests as me (music), and we CONSTANTLY bicker about things-- whether it's competition about the CDs we buy, who is a "truer fan" of the bands we both like, and even who is better at playing guitar or something stupid like that. I try really hard to take care of him and actually SHARE these things but he, as a younger teenager, seems bent on creating competition and I think that's totally natural. However, our relationship has gotten much better over the past year or so and now we actually sometimes even successfully play music together so I think an important part of clearing up sibling rivalry is just time, for both kids to mature enough to actually talk to each other in a friendly and open way.

I have a brother who is 17 months older than myself. And I would say we have never had sibling rivalry

Well, sibling rivalry isn't something you can avoid and will attach to you as long as you let yourself think too much. For me, I would just think of this as part of the growing process because I know there are siblings who want to be successful and better than the other, but does not mean you have to do the same because that is what your siblings want to compete, not you. You just let them do what they think they want, and you have your own way of doing things in life. It is not easy to really compete who's better than whom because you can't, unless you want to get involved into this kind of sibling rivalry.

You said that you mean that they feel happy when you feel sad, is that confirmed or are you just guessing?
