Don't allow 3rd world IPs on SL - Adorapuff - 02-28-2014 To prevent spam I don't think we should allow 3rd world countries (India included) onto SL. If you are in a 3rd world country, it should redirect you to a page with an input box where you input your IP for Oni to allow, along with a random number of sentences on a random topic to type out to prove you are not a bot. The number of sentences and topic can be randomly drawn from an array. This will basically kill spam on SL. RE: Don't allow 3rd world IPs on SL - Satan - 02-28-2014 Or fill the approval box with ads for only On I to browse through. Legitimate users would be mixed in with ads. Better even would be can't post links of you have less than 25 posts until link is approved by staff RE: Don't allow 3rd world IPs on SL - Jolly - 02-28-2014 This sounds pretty much like discrimination based on your heritage, etc. There are spammers from every country in the world, I don't think it's right to put an amount of people go trough the extra trouble just because they're born in their country or just visiting it. B) Its not discrimination. Its a measure to prevent spam which mostly comes form 3rd world IPs, and not IPs in UK or US. RE: Don't allow 3rd world IPs on SL - Eclipse - 02-28-2014 Or maybe just increase the security on the registration, like add the sentence thing to it. I think this would be much easier as Oni would not have to be bothered, registration won't take too long when he's drunk, and the system cannot be bypassed with proxies. Also, I think that the gates should be closed now. HQ activity is on the decline. RE: Don't allow 3rd world IPs on SL - Llebacc - 02-28-2014 Satan's recommendation on doing a 25 post limit until links can be posted is effective, in my experience. Many spammers won't want to put in the effort only to be banned for spamming. This could potentially handicap ordinary new members, but it shouldn't last too long if they post regularly. Well its not even that, just remove links from being active in a post until the link is approved by a moderator, or until the user has 25 posts. Within 25 posts, you're usually able to get a feel of what someone is here for. Stops backlink leeching in its tracks, and doesn't necessarily screw new members over, unless they are going to rage about having to build up trust in order to post links. Provided the links are actually moderated and approved if they are appropriate, there shouldn't be an issue to legitimate newer users posting a valid on-topic link. RE: Don't allow 3rd world IPs on SL - w00t - 02-28-2014 Yes, lets exclude well over 80% of the population RE: Don't allow 3rd world IPs on SL - Equinox - 02-28-2014 I would comply, here's my only problem. Bots that can really do much to SL are very minimal. Think about it, if there were as many bots on SL as people in our average society makes, we'd be fucked. But thankfully most bots are denied connection by our secured SSL and the forum itself. RE: Don't allow 3rd world IPs on SL - void - 02-28-2014 I agree with possible added security to registration, or maybe a intermittent captcha to post? Maybe a capctha just to post a thread alone? by an "intermittent captcha", it'd happen every so often ie if someone is posting at an extreme rate. |
