AF News - 1st Edition! - Phytrix - 01-01-2013

AF News Launched!
The currently unofficial group, AF News, has finally made its debut. The group will be led by myself (Phytrix) for the time being. Currently, we are planning on releasing an edition fortnightly, although this may change once the team is fully established. There will be positions advertised over the coming week in the Group Discussion forum, so keep an eye out if you wish to help out. Thanks to the current team who put together this first edition. May there be many more in the future. If you have any questions regarding the AF News or wish to leave feedback, this thread would be the best place for it. Apologies for the poor GFX on this and the lack of a GFX section. Currently looking for someone to fill the role. We will be launching a new recruitment thread later in the week.

AF Radio Reamped!
AF Radio's founder, Kinanizer, created a thread just yesterday, ironically titled AF Radio -- Reamped. The revampment of AF Radio follows The Anarchist's announcement in relation to groups and their creation. The old thread, located in the Music section, has been disregarded as a new thread (with info and recruitment) has been posted in the Group Discussion section. The AF Radio team is looking for new recruits who have an interest in music and with to DJ for the radio. You can view the recruitment and info thread here, or listen to some fresh tracks directly from the radio here.

Referral Contest
The Anarchist posted a thread earlier in the week in the Announcements section regarding a new referral contest! The last referral contest also ended earlier this week, which also hosted a posting contest on the same thread. Xeronations won both the referrals and the posting contest, while Anonymous and CyberSavage respectively ran a close second and third in the posting contest, and Felix The Cat and DevilChild placed second and third in the Referrals contest. Congratulations to all that placed. The new referral contest offers a grand prize of Elite (or 2,500 AP) and 1,250 AP, a second prize of Elite, and a third prize of 1,250 AP. The new referral contest thread can be seen here, and good luck to all contenders!

Interview - The Anarchist(text)
Spoiler:
Phoenix: Welcome to the interview The Anarchist, for the first edition of the news. You are the admin and owner of anarchyforums.net, do you have anyone you wish to shout out to for helping you in the creation of the site?
The Anarchist: Well, I'd love to shout out to INST1NCT and Nohbdy, who've been at my side for a pretty long time. There's too many people who've contributed to make AF what it is, so I'll just leave it at them.

Phoenix: Very well. What inspired the forum? Why did you choose the name anarchy forums?
The Anarchist: Well, around August I realized that I didn't actually have much important going on. I was pretty bored with the year starting and all, so I decided I'd gather up my previous contacts and start a new forum. I have a decent amount of experience with owning forums, so it was pretty easy to start things up. However, the big issue was with getting ahold of previous contacts. I had been inactive for about a year or so and it was surprising any of my contacts were still around, much less remembered me. I wanted to make a technology forum that wasn't like the others available.
As far as names go, my past forums have all had terrible names. Several people know that I used to own a group a couple of years ago called Anonymous Citizens (which had no affiliation with 4chan's Anonymous). Later a website was created for the group and I renamed the site to Digital Underground. Digital Underground just so happened to be the name of a music group (and I felt bad for picking the name). When I made Anarchy Forums, I picked the name because I thought it fit, and my username has always been The Anarchist so it made sense. Some might think it's a bad name, but whatever.

Phoenix: That makes sense, would you say anarchyforums.net affiliates itself with actual anarchy, or is that just a name you liked?
The Anarchist: Well, there's two definitions for anarchy. "A state of disorder due to absence or nonrecognition of authority" is the first, which pretty much means chaos. The second is "absence of government and absolute freedom of the individual, regarded as a political ideal." While it's a synonym of chaos, it can also describe a political ideology. While I've done plenty of reading on the political ideology (being a libertarian myself), I think our name primarily represents the first definition. You can check the definitions here:
http://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/anarchy

Phoenix: Though you regard the first definition I have noticed that you do have staff that will not allow rules to be broken, so there is a government if you will, over the site. Have you had any issues so far with people breaking rules since you started the site, or is it minimal?
The Anarchist: Ironic, right? Unfortunately, I do have to moderate the website so it doesn't turn into a complete disgrace. Things like child pornography and fraud don't belong on the site and I can get in trouble if people post either. While I'd love to grant people absolute freedom, it's not possible. Additionally, I'd like to mention that Xeronations resigned from staff, so I'm the only one moderating right now. As far as having issues with rule-breaking, it's been easy for me. When someone breaks a rule I'm able to warn them and move on.

Phoenix: So you are the only one running the site at the moment, well it is small for now but I assume it will grow larger very quickly as most good sites do. What changes, or features do you plan to add to the site in the future? What is going on in that mind of yours for the site next?
The Anarchist: Well, most people agree that I'm always scheming and I plan ahead. I also generally keep my plans secret. However, I guess for the interview's sake I can give a few details as to what's going on my mind. As most know, December's been a rough month for us so I've been working on getting more users. I plan on putting a lot of resources towards increasing our member count so we have more people. In addition to advertising, I'll also be adding a few things to improve the site's usability, and possibly design. One thing that might be added is an Imgur.com image uploader.
There's also a few other things that I can't mention quite yet, but I'll leave you guys guessing.

Phoenix: Good to see that you are looking ahead and keeping people guessing at the same time, I am sure we only have great features ahead of us. Speaking of great features, what is the thing you are most proud of achieving in the making of this forum?
The Anarchist: Right now I'd like to see more involvement from the members. While we have a bunch of dedicated people, it'd be neat to see more of the users educating each other. Knowledge is one thing you can't buy and I think people should appreciate it and share it. In addition to sharing information, I think it'd be neat if members referred more people to the forum. It's always nice to see new faces around the forum and people don't know how much of a difference one person can make on the site. Many of the forum's members wouldn't be here if they had not been invited.

Phoenix: I can agree with that, word of mouth is one of the best and most useful types of advertisement. Speaking of advertisement do you plan on running ad campaigns to advertise anarchyforums?
The Anarchist: No doubt, word of mouth has probably been our strongest method of getting new people involved. It's amazing how the user base can exponentially grow just from a few people spreading the word. As I mentioned earlier, December has been a hard month for us. A lot of people have been on vacation and less active (including myself). In order to make up for it I will definitely be getting ads around the internet. Generally we've advertised on similar forums, so keep your eyes peeled.

Phoenix: Do you plan on adding advertisements to anarchyforums.net?
The Anarchist: It's unlikely the site will ever have ads, asides from the single Adsense ad we have at the footer. Occasionally I might give another site a sticky, provided they aren't competition, but it's rare. For the most part, I dislike ads and I like to keep the forum ad-free so people can enjoy it.

Phoenix: I like that idea, hopefully the rising costs of owning a growing website wont push you to ad advertisements, though if you do you can remove them for a fee perhaps. Do you have anything else you would like to add The Anarchist?
The Anarchist: Well, to address your statement - we shouldn't ever have issues with funding. I have a decent amount of money and we receive occasional donations. I won't change site policy just to obtain funding.
Other than that, I don't have anything to add.

Phoenix: Well it has been nice interviewing you The Anarchist, I am glad that you have such a good handle on the site and I look forward to future additions to the site, the features you add. Thank you for joining us in the first edition of the AF news, see you around the forums!

Where do you think the AF News will be taken in the coming months, and what do you see it bringing to the site?

BreShiE - I'd say that it has potential, as it does with any site. Depending on how the first issue is handled and what is actually done in/for it could mean a lot of different things. It could be quite beneficial to the site and would give the users a great opportunity to find out what's going down on AF.

The Anarchist - I can see it being important in the future and being a clean way of showing recent events. It'd add a bit of guidance to the World news section. Plus, it's a great way to inform people.

Nelson Mandela Discharged
Midweek, Nelson Mandela, who served as an influential President of South Africa in the mid-late 90's, was discharged from hospital on Wednesday after serving three weeks of treatment for a recurrent lung infection, coupled with the removal of gallstone. At the age of 94, people are starting to wonder whether his downfall is nearing, and whether in fact he was discharged to pass away with family in his own home. The family denies any such claims and refers to them as 'insults' to Mandella. He's claimed to be in good health: at least, for his age.

Cruelty Of Society On Display
As police continue their search for a woman who caused a public murder in front of a crowd of around 80 people, authors globally have seized this event as a primary example of the cruelty of modern society. The 46-year-old Indian man was shoved onto the tracks with a train rapidly approaching by a female, who witnesses claim was speaking to herself quietly before leaping out of her seat and making the shove. Witnesses also claim she was loosely tailing the man. He died instantly and was identified by personal belongings. This isn't a unique case, either. In fact, it's the second case like this in the month of December. "It's just a really sad commentary on the world and on human beings, period," said Howard Roth, who takes the subway daily. It serves as a reminder to everyone that danger lurks around every corner.

Raped And Beaten - Left Dead
A 23-year-old female was brutally raped and beaten, while a male friend who was with her was also beaten, and left to rot on the side of the road. The woman was gang-raped on a moving bus by an unknown amount of men, although 6 have been arrested so far while 2 police officers were suspended, before being found by a passerby and taken to hospital. The woman passed away in hospital, and riots break out while her body is being flown back to her family. Much of Delhi has been sealed off due to violent public protests in an attempt to calm the people. The protests have killed one police officer so far. Sexual violence against woman isn't uncommon in India, although this particular case has ignited action for strengthening laws in relation to sexual violence.

Kanye West Ignites Kardashian Conflict
Kanye West, well known rapper with a short fuse, has been dating Kim Kardashian, famous actress and... uh, a symbol of appeal for males globally, for a matter of months. Although, the wider community is starting to doubt the possibility of this relationship lasting, as Kanye and Kim's mother and manager, Kris Jenner, light up a family feud. Magazines report that Kanye and Kris have been having ongoing arguments and conflicts about Kim's professional life and their relationship, which puts Kim in a tough position as she's pushed around in the middle. Sources state that Kim has been extremely prospectful that the issues would heal over, although apparently, "...it's just been getting worse!"

Lady Gaga Replaced By The Rockettes For NY Ball Drop
New York's well-known Times Square ball drop is rapidly drawing in, being an event that attracts hundreds of thousands to the city to share in a magical night with the world. After Lady Gaga's memorable performance last year, performing her hit songs and laying the Mayor a midnight kiss, NY's Mayor finally announced who's on the roll for 2013's launch. The Rockettes, a dance troupe from New York, is sending 18 of their dancers to perform, as Gaga is preoccupied with other entertainment. There are high hopes and much enthusiasm in relation to the performance, although only time will tell if they can perform in Gaga's shadows.

The War Z
The War Z was pulled from Steam recently, and the creator of The War Z has apologized for the game's launch in an open letter to the War Z community. He stated in the letter that Hammerpoint Interactive failed to communicate with its plans for the Zombie Survival Game, which gave them negative feedback from the community. He also says the success of growing members made him arrogant towards player concerns over the game. The game should have been more than an indie game, and he plans on making it a 'large online venture'. The War Z got 700,000 members within a two month period after its launch. The creator says that, because of his success, he did not pay enough attention to upcoming features, ignoring his buyers. He says that it won’t happen again. “I do believe that we aren’t even close to uncovering the true potential for The War Z, and I hope that in the coming year, we’ll be able to regain trust from people who were alienated by our actions and we’ll be able to move forward and grow the game together," the creator stated on a final note. It seeems he will be paying more attention to updates and the community of The War Z. Refunds were offered to all purchasers.

Day Z
Dean Rocket, and developer for Day Z has considered leaving the development team due to high stress. He has been asked for many interviews regarding the game, and requests for information regarding upcoming updates by fans and he is getting depressed as a result of the stress. "From a personal standpoint, this whole 'saga' of the development made me seriously question if I wanted to be involved in the industry and I gave serious thought to cutting my losses and not being involved in the project." He also said that "I've been getting hammered by a massive amount with requests for information about DayZ release, interviews and my reactions to this and stuff and such - but for my own sanity I retreated and have kept to myself." Hopefully he will continue and Day Z will continue its success.

Gaming Video Of The Week

A fun Minecraft holiday video created by FVDisco features this week, showing viewers that Santa isn't always jolly.

Acer: Touch-Screen Taking Over
The president of Acer, Jim Wong, stated earlier in the week that touch-screen laptops and PCs will be the next big thing in the tech community, and will be as big, if not bigger, as tablets are today. Apple is a no-show so far in relation to touch screen laptops and PCs, although customers and critics alike are starting to question when or whether Apple will take this leap. Wong has criticised Windows 8 for its lack of ability to easily adapt with the user, although he stated that things take time to become a hit sometimes, which some suggest may be the case with Windows 8. Acer generally stays out of the larger issues and work without conflict or major competitors, although one can only wonder how long it'll be until other competitors jump into the touch-screen laptop market.

Samsung Galaxy S3 Mini's Lawsuit Dropped
It seems Apple, after constantly flooding Samsung with lawsuits and claims to slow down processes, Samsung have finally decided to throw down their hand on something. The infringement allegations launched by Apple were revoked earlier this week in exchange for Samsung's assurance that they will not market the new Samsung Galaxy S3 Mini is the U.S. Representatives from both parties refused to comment on the matter, although Samsung obviously feels this case wasn't worth the billions they've already paid this year to Apple from lawsuits. The South Korean electronics giant shall head back home once more in shame.
