How to chit-chat - Cressi - 02-13-2014 Woop, woop ^^ I'm bored, and feel like writing something, so here we go ![]() How to chit-chat
Areas: - Background - The FORM-form - The beauty of the FORM - Closing Background
"More than the weather?" you ask? "How could one possibly talk about more than sports?"? Well, take a good read, and find out ![]() The method of small talking has been around for a very long time, and has been used in many contexts. However, small talking has never been as easy as it often seems to be. What if you meet someone completely asocial? What if you cannot think of a single topic to talk about? The solution's here for you. Ladies and gentlemen; I present to you The F.O.R.M.-form
The F.O.R.M. is a form (duh) which makes small talking much easier. As you might have figured, the form is an abbreviation of: F - Family O - Occupation R - Recreation M - Message Examples of conversations: Family - "How's your family?" - "How's it going for your brother in school?" - "How's your grandparents?" (Make sure you know they're alive, otherwise it'll get awkward.) Occupation - "How did it go with that promotion you were getting?" - "How's your boss doing?" - "Are you still working at <company>?" Recreation - "How do you spend your free-time?" - "How's it going with your summer house/camping/caravan?" - "How do you feel about canoeing?" Message - This is not as much a question as the closing act of your conversation. By message, I mean with what you leave your subject when you part. This does not have to be complicated or difficult, but can simply be: - "It was nice talking to you, and if you ever need any help with <topic>, you need who to call!" - "I had a great time talking to you; here's my phone number." - - - - - - - - Notice how most questions use the word "how". This is because the words "what", "when", and "where" can be answered using single words, whereas "how" and "why" require some explanation from your subject. The beauty of the F.O.R.M.
The beauty in the form is not the simplicity nor the fact that it makes an actual word. The point with the F.O.R.M. is that it can be adapted to any thing you need. For example; these words fit just as well. F - Fitness, Feelings (be careful with this one so that it doesn't get sensitive.) O - Olympics (especially suitable now), Opera (if you listen to it; few people do), Organics R - Rally/Racing, Rain (Weather), Regions ("where are you from?", "What is it like there?") M - The "M" cannot really be changed, as it's not a question... Closing
So, as we've learned, the F.O.R.M.-form is highly adaptable as well as easy to learn and easy to remember. I hope you have learnt something worth knowing about small talks and conversations from me and this thread. Thank you for reading, and Have A Nice Day
