linux vs windows 10 - averageguywith - 01-15-2025

which one is more usable in gaming?

Not all games will support Linux since you can't really make a functional anticheat. Just use Windows unless you really know what you're doing (and want to play multiplayer games).

Most games these days use a kernel anti-cheat so you will most likely need to dual-boot Windows to be able to play them or use a KVM in Linux.

Windows 10: Best game compatibility, better drivers, DirectX 12, and easier setup.
Linux: Great for emulation, lower system overhead, but some games (especially with anti-cheat) won’t work.

Verdict: Windows 10 is the best choice for gaming. Linux works but requires more tweaks.

While yes, Linux is a little bit more hands on in terms of tweaking games it mostly offers very similar performance. The biggest issue really is some anti-cheats but then again I'd rather not have kernel level anticheats in my system to begin with Smile.
Also nowadays there are tons of distros that are very well "tweaked" for gaming (see PikaOS, CachyOS, Endeavour and so many more).

However if you're very much into games like League, Valorant, Fortnite, Siege or whatever it may be then you should probably stick to windows.

Most games that require anti-cheat wont work on Linux because of kernel anti-cheat. I enjoy most single-player games as they work perfect usually with Steams Proton. Also online Minecraft works perfect too. But most of my gaming is done on my main rig which runs Windows. Its better that I cant game as much on my work laptop anyways.

RE: linux vs windows 10 - deandan - 02-01-2025

Windows 10 is generally better for gaming due to broader game compatibility, better driver support, and optimization for popular gaming platforms like Steam, Epic Games, and Xbox Game Pass. Linux has improved with Proton and Steam Deck, but still faces compatibility issues with some games and anti-cheat systems. If gaming is your main priority, Windows 10 is the better choice.

Just stick with Windows 10. Maybe look into Windows 10 LTSC for longevity sake. Linux works pretty well these days, but not for all games.
