Antivirus enquiry - yus_09 - 12-17-2024

Sone guy posted a job offer on a server I was in to which I accepted. It was regarding a web3 game for which they were developing. To continue to my job I would have to download the game so I could be involved in testing. When i downloaded it windows built in security blocked the download saying it had a trojan. I refused the job offer despite everything looking legit on their side. Could it be that windows antivirus was wrong?

Antivirus tools aren’t perfect; false positives happen. Still, remain cautious. Scan with multiple security programs, request reputable references, or verify authenticity before proceeding with unfamiliar downloads. Always protect your system.

In this situation it would probably be a good idea to run the game inside of a container of sorts, like a virtual machine.

However the fact that windows flagged it is not a good sign. You could try uploading the executable on virus total, which will give you a better idea if it is truly malicious or not.

It's good that you trusted your instincts and decided to prioritize your safety. While false positives can happen with antivirus software, it's always better to err on the side of caution, especially when dealing with downloads from lesser-known sources.
