I am very experienced in programming and computers, but never ever tried hacking. What's the best route I should take coming from this background ?

me too actually but never got any good tutorials on it because if it's available for everyone then its bad one

Learn how to reverse engineer, decompilers etc

I would advise start with Python and opsec. Then next is construction of db systems and its securities, of course learning all these on a unix based system
