Agreed, but I think its more like everything has become much more expensive and it's harder to save money. Another option is changing your focus, instead of investing, increase your skillset and become an expert in a niche field.

In many countries things are harder now. Wages have stagnated, cost of living and inflation have risen. Discretionary income is lower, meaning it's harder to save. The middle class, as it was in the west, has considerably shrunk.
