Vietnam war unironically. Both sides committed atrocities unlike most people who know My Lai and not the summary executions done by the North Vietnamese during Tet offensive. Obviously as people die overseas in a country where free speech is permitted, there is much more opposition & criticism of the war can be voiced, it wasn't USA fighting communism for no reason other than imperialism. It was a TWO sided proxy war, while south Vietnam may not have been as economically equal as the north, it's no more an American puppet than North Vietnam was to China/USSR. People tend to forget (outside of Vietnam ironically) that the Chinese has the most historical conflict with the Vietnamese, even invading Vietnam after the war.

Cold War mostly due to the implications, espionage, and number of countries involved. The Cold War was also unique in the fact that the U.S. did not directly attack major powers. Being after WWII, the U.S. was also determining how to handle the future of nuclear weapons. Stalin knew of the Manhattan project before it was completed and wanted Russia to harness the same power. Battling communist sentiment became the government's priority, with HUAC going after potential communist influencers. In addition to targeting citizens, the U.S. also targeted proxies like Vietnam.
