Gaming Industry Layoffs - Boudica - 02-10-2024
There has been a big series of layoffs in the gaming industry as of late, especially in Western game development.
Forbes talks about a few different things contributing to the problem:
- Game Development Budgets Have Been Massive And Unsustainable: Mobile games and mid-tier being more profitable games currently
- Increased Inflation
- Elon Musk’s Layoffs At Twitter/X: Forbes reckon the layoffs from Musk showed how feasible it was to do mass layoffs for the US & European teach industry.
Forbes also describes how the gaming industry in Asian countries is not facing the same scale of problem, citing the lesser development budgets (and therefore less risk from flops), and strict laws that protect employees from being fired (especially in Japan).
I'm no expert in this industry so can offer no professional opinions, but as an industry often filled with employees who love working on games, I imagine these layoffs must really hurt. While they may be necessary for the businesses doing them, it doesn't make them any less hard for the people who have lost jobs they love.
