Ethical hacking can mean a lot of things. I think that when hackers help people with retrieving money, finding people, and reporting sexual predators that it is a great thing. with regards to careers in ethical hacking you can become a pen tester and try to compromise a company's network for pay. Pen testers usually get paid really good into the 6 figures.

Its really not particularly sketchy anymore. There are many opportunities to work fully legally with no liability to yourself working as a pentester or redteamer, etc. Lots of offensive security positions exist in the current year, and there are many bug bounty programs with very reasonable legal constraints. Its definitely a viable career path.
