Different races and intellect? - Sir - 10-22-2013

Maybe you've heard somebody say "x race isn't as smart as y race"?

I know I have, although until recently I had always pushed it off as some form of racial discrimination/superiority contest nonsense.

Then I started thinking about it, from an evolutionary standpoint it could actually feasible. As many of you ma or may not know, we are products of our environments, meaning we adapt to better survive our environments, that goes for every living organism.

What if race x is in a different and more "dangerous" environment than race y? It seems likely that their psychological development may be affected.

Any thoughts, opinions, sources, or anything to back this up or disprove it?

Every race/people will be the highest in what they deem intelligence. A tribal warrior need not know algebra, but he needs to know how to trick other soldiers, how to lead, how to train, and how to quickly and efficiently kill people.

Excellent point.
I suppose I should of clarified what I meant by intellect, I copied this from an old thread I posted a while ago, but I believe at the time I meant the capacity to quickly and efficiently learn new things.

Still, that ability is valued more in certain cultures, which means that people of your particular background are more likely to have greater ability to do so.

Yes, differences in upbringing will effect how well and how rapidly our brain learns, but at a biological level our DNA is not significantly different enough for me to suppose that this is due to predisposition, not environment.

From an evolutionary standpoint it seems possible to me. What makes you believe that?

Biological evolution happens over millions of years, which is longer than people had spread beyond a very small area of the globe. Behavioural evolution, or what we learn to do to survive, takes significantly less time.

Naturally, so you're proposing that because of this DNA does not factor into intellect?

Here's to why you have the A+ award!

Not in the broader sense of how well and quickly we can learn. I'm sure some biochem. differences have arose due to mutations and toxins( some people just naturally have more active opiate systems, for example ) but I wouldn't expect a significant bias along racial lines, assuming the environment was the same.

The pattern of learning seems to be the same among all humans, being that initially hearing something makes certain connections, hearing it again makes others, and using that knowledge to accomplish a task strengthens some connections( either by thickening or producing more related synapse ).

Yet the environment is not the same in most cases, or so I believe.
