I just don't like the smilies when they get in the way of writing, which they do often. As long as they're not linked directly to what you type, I'm all for this kind of idea.

Lol. I love how when we implemented this on Discussion Zone, everyone complained that it reduced the quality of the place. But personally, I loved it - I think we should implement it here too.

Personally, I dislike smilies, on my forum I've removed them completely as I feel that they lower the quality of the posts, if you need them you can always use the [img] tag.
