European Union's provisional agreement on Common USB-C Chargers - dnks - 06-07-2022 Spoiler: Source ![]() Literally complained about no USB-C on the iPhone on the WWDC thread I made, and then this article went to answer my question. When will iPhone's have USB-C? No later than Autumn 2024. Quote:European Union co-legislators have reached provisional agreement on a common charging solutions for smartphones, laptops, tablets and other small and medium sized electronics — some 15 different categories in all — agreeing that, by autumn 2024, USB Type C will be the common charging port for in scope devices. This one comes very close to the EcoDesign rules that they were talking about earlier in the year: Spoiler: Source Quote:“The objective of the Commission’s Ecodesign proposal is to make sustainable products the norm on the EU market and reduce their overall environmental and climate impacts,” the EU’s executive writes, adding: “The ‘take-make-use-dispose’ model can be avoided, and much of a product’s environmental impacts is determined at the design stage.” All in all, good news if you ask me. We can expect to use the USB-C form factor for the next, 10 to 20 years? I am happy to be living in Europe right now. RE: European Union's provisional agreement on Common USB-C Chargers - Boudica - 06-22-2022 Very interesting. I know there are plenty of drawbacks as well - I.e. it's difficult to innovate and make new designs which could be "superior" products, as R&D for all these companies is entirely separate. I wonder if tech companies will adopt business models similar to car manufacturers who also have to alter car design to match EU/UK laws & regulations. RE: European Union's provisional agreement on Common USB-C Chargers - Dismas - 06-22-2022 I'd argue that while this is great for consumers, allowing the EU to dictate what components smartphones use is a pretty slippery slope. Awhile back someone modded an iPhone X to use USB-C, and it sold for >$85K at auction: https://www.pcmag.com/news/custom-built-usb-c-iphone-sells-for-86001 RE: European Union's provisional agreement on Common USB-C Chargers - UnlimitedDesk - 06-28-2022 I'm actually really excited about this. Of course, it does seem to be too little too late if they're pushing the "less waste" agenda, but it'll do some good hopefully. RE: European Union's provisional agreement on Common USB-C Chargers - loozey - 07-05-2022 i think that this is uselless the new law enter in the future not in the near one so i bet that we don't have any type of port on phone for that day |
