Alexa Shutting Down for Good - Dismas - 12-17-2021

Not to be confused with the voice assistant, the analytics site Alexa.com will be shutting down for good in May. In the early days of the internet Alexa.com was excellent for keeping track of a site's growth/potential. For many years I used Alexa to monitor and track sites, so it's a shame to see it go down.

Founded back in 1996, just a few years after the birth of the World Wide Web, Alexa Internet is a service that tracks and compares the traffic of websites, gathering browsing data from the Alexa Toolbar (subsequently replaced by browser extensions) as well as sites that have installed the Alexa script on their pages.

Amazon snapped up Alexa Internet and the Alexa.com domain back in 1999, a full 15 years before Alexa the voice assistant made her first appearance.

Back in the day, a site’s Alexa traffic ranking was a big deal. Not only could website owners stack their properties up against competitors, they could also raise their advertising rates if their rankings were high enough. The Alexa Toolbar was also a popular helper app for browsers that, among other tools, included a then-novel popup blocker.

But times change, and Alexa Internet eventually found itself in an increasingly competitive field. While there are still plenty of loyal Alexa.com users around, Amazon clearly feels that the cost of keeping the site operational is no longer worth the expense.

So what would be one of it's main competitors? I'm not too familiar with these kinds of sites, but it's sad to see things change or be retired, especially if they were a great tool in their heyday.

I am not sure of any competitors that offer a 1:1 service, but Google has more specific analytics for ranking sites now. There's also options like Ahrefs, among others.

I've read about It around a week ago.

There are many alternatives, but I'll keep using Alexa until close of business.

What makes you choose Alexa over others?

Familiarization, simplicity/ease of use.

I realize Its statistics are not always accurate, but It's served my needs well over the years.

Now it’s competitors will have some space to shine again. But I’ve never actually used Alexa unless if I happen to want to know the Alexa rank of a website but it’s semrush I’ve been using all along. And they should be similar I think

I'd also say they'd be trying to outnumber each other, with the Intention of having their service as the most sought-after Alexa alternative.

Aside from Similarweb, what are other good alternatives are homogeneous to Alexa?
