Alec Baldwin Shoots Cinematographer - Dismas - 10-24-2021
There had been rumors that it was a blank or nonlethal round, but it sounds like it was a regular round that killed the cinematographer. Terrible gun safety and a needless loss of life.

An assistant director, Dave Halls, grabbed a prop gun off a cart at a desert movie ranch and handed it to Baldwin during a Thursday rehearsal for the Western film "Rust," according to court records made public Friday.
"Cold gun," Halls yelled, declaring the weapon didn't carry live ammunition and was ready to fire.
But it wasn't. When Baldwin pulled the trigger, he unwittingly killed 42-year-old cinematographer Halyna Hutchins and wounded director Joel Souza, who was standing behind her inside a wooden, chapel-like building.

This Is what has me at a loss:

This is insane. What would the usual processes be for "gun safety" when it comes to prop guns? It's hardly as though this is the first time in history that this has happened, but it's very unusual for it to happen in this day and age.
What also confuses me is, why the hell is there a real gun amongst the props? You don't use real nuclear warhead when shooting a film about a nuclear warhead. If it was the 1920s I'd get, you need something that looks real, so for the shots where nobody is getting hit on screen, use a real one. But it's 2021, there are so many companies and mechanical engineers that have created intensely realistic "fake" guns.
Tl;dr - Obviously, this didn't need to happen. Why was the real gun there in the first place?

From what I've been reading, it seems like these guns are supposed to go through a series of checks and clears... which clearly just didn't happen. What's worse? There were prior incidents of misfires with this weapon on set and crew members had already protested the safety on set. There were so many point this went wrong.

No doubt. Many guns weigh half as much unloaded. Despite his roles, he's an actor that knows nothing about firearms or safety.

It's not his responsibility to be well acquainted with the Ins and outs of firearms. He's an actor, who put his trust In the hands of those who created his role on the set, which tragically resulted In an Innocent loss of life.

A murder charge would be excessive, given his inexperience. However, he should be held accountable for his actions. In an ideal world, everyone that handles a firearm should be educated on safety - whether it's their father or a paid instructor.

A very sad situation for both of the families involved. I would hope that this was just an unfortunate accident. We do know that Alec is inexperienced with firearms. So the blame can't all be shifted on him.
But we don't know the full story yet. I still question how he was able to actually shot the cinematographer, and kill her in one shot. But some information just came out about the armorer who clearly wasn't doing her job properly at all.
