Qubes OS [Unable to install] - Chai - 09-23-2021

Currently I am struggling to install Qubes OS.

The main issue is that upon using a 16GB USB and Rufus I have been able to write the ISO image to the USB, however trying to boot from it or installing the OS itself has proven difficult. Basically, once booting from BIOS/UEFI it gives me a black screen with a few options 'Install' etc, selecting an option does nothing.

I have tried re-writing the Image as 'ISO' and with 'DD', I have also tried using Etcher which cannot even successfully write the ISO.

- I could try a USB smaller than 8GB
- I have a NVIDIA RTX 2060 so potentially that is interfering.

Apart from that I am at a loss.

Any help would be appreciated.

Heard neat things about Qubes, so hopefully you get it figured out. Asking the obvious, but have you tried other USBs? Are you able to install other distros without issue?

Your GPU wouldn't have anything to do with it. The hardware is old enough to be supported.

Have you tried running the ISO in a virtual machine? The ISO from the Qubes website could be corrupted or broken.

Another thing, but you'll want to make sure virtualization is enabled in your BIOs (dependent on Intel or AMD).

Does your hardware meet the system requirements?

Also, have you tried burning the ISO to disc and Installing directly from that?

Yeah, definitely want to atleast try it out, I haven't yet tried any other USB's I only have the one at the moment unfortunately, will need to to try an 8GB one as the Qubes devs recommend that on their site. Currently running Linux so haven't had problems installing distros, I dual boot.

Ah, on the Qubes troubleshooting guides they advise that NVIDIA are notorious for causing problems, I believe that is during the installation itself which I have not even been able to attempt so far.

This is something that I have not actually tried yet, so I will try that next.

If virtualization is not enabled, that could very well be the issue. Both Intel/AMD boards have a setting for that. It's also needed for stuff like VMware or Bluestacks.

I can run Bluestacks, as I have ran it in the past so probably won't need to check virtualization but I will anyway.

Super annoying when an OS won't install

When you were installing on Rufus, did you install for MBR or GPT? If your motherboard supports UEFI, you can install with either MBR or GPT. I would recommend GPT though. But if your motherboard only supports BIOS, then you can only install with MBR as your partition scheme.
