AMD Zen 4 Expected February or April 2022 - Dismas - 09-08-2021

Looks like 2022 will be an interesting year for CPUs. With the 5950X shortages ending and prices dropping, it is evident that new CPUs are on the way. AMD's CEO recently announced that the Zen 4 CPUs are on track for the 2022 launch. These CPUs would use the 5nm architecture. Intel's roadmap can be found here for comparison.

Quote:At the Zen 3 reveal in October 2020, AMD Chief Technology Officer Mark Papermaster confirmed that Zen 4 was "on track, in design". His presentation was accompanied by the following timeline:

Our next official update came in July 2021, when AMD CEO Lisa Su confirmed that Zen 4 was on track for a 2022 launch. That's roughly in line with AMD's usual update cycle for its CPU architecture:
  • Zen - March 2017
  • Zen 2 - August 2019
  • Zen 3 - November 2020

If the company were to follow this closely, Zen 4 would arrive sometime between February and April 2022.

Is it just me or does it seem crazy that the next wave of major consumer product launches from AMD and NVIDIA is H2 2022?

Zen 3D is going to release later this year and that is the closest thing to "Zen 3+" we'll get.

Zen 4 is going to be bringing a very new feature to AMD CPUs. No more PGA. AMD will be using their new LGA-1718 socket from now on.

Here's a render of what the new socket design will look like. And as you can see from this render, it will be using a similar mechanism to Intel's.

This article say Zen 4 not before 2022. Since DDR5 memory will not be there before end of Q4/21, it makes no sense to release a new cpu without memory.

With the shortage, it does seem like things escalated quickly. I already have a 5950X, so I'll see them again in 4-5 years.
