Running a Server On a Separate Computer - cr33pyguy - 11-27-2012 Well, as you can read from the networking part of the forums, I made my old PC into a server. However, it has only some 1 GB sticks of ram, so I was looking into upgrading it. The problem is that I am also considering buying a PC, in parts, and then putting it together. The thing is, that I could get 16 GB of RAM for good price, but still - the old PC only supports 4 GB, and the 16 GB package comes with two 8 GB sticks. So, I could either: -Put all 16 GB towards the new computer and run the server on that. or -Put 8 GB towards both PCs, and then run the server on the other and use the other one (with this, the other computer would still USE only 4 GB out of the 8GB, but I could move the 8GB if needed). Opinions! RE: running a server on a separate computer - Nefarious - 11-27-2012 You should split it, most computers really only need 6 GB of ram. RE: running a server on a separate computer - Nohbdy - 11-27-2012 The way you describe the situation, two things come to mind. 1. You should consider upgrading to a 64-bit operating system. 2. Is the memory type the same for both computers? RE: running a server on a separate computer - Xeronations - 11-27-2012 I would split. I doubt either of your computers would need 16GB of RAM. |
